Charley was first to reach the mystery door. He looked through it, the unlit black void of a room meeting him as he glanced back at Valley. She opened her bag once more and found her phone. She didn't open it but turned on its flashlight. The two gave each other a nod and walked in.

The pale light from Valley's phone reflected on a shiny floor. As the two walked into a room they almost didn't notice the door closing behind them.

Charley was first to snap his head back and in alarm try to push the door open, but even if Valley helped with trying the door shut in front of them.

"Well," Valley said calmly, "Let's just see where we are."

She shone her flashlight around, pointing it in every direction. The reflection came from the floor, but no walls were in sight.

They started walking calmly, finding a wall after a while which they followed. Soon the two found a second door. Valley gave Charley a nod and he opened the door.
A string of light had both of them blink before they adjusted to it. Behind the door they found a new room.

As Charley stepped inside Valley turned off her flashlight. The round room they walked into was tall, books lining the walls. The bookshelves seemed to reach the ceiling, with ladders to climb up all the way. As Valley looked around, Charley got distracted by the books.

"Don't let down your guard," Valley mumbled as she reached the middle. There were four smaller bookcases standing in a square in the middle, making a secluded spot. As Valley stepped into it she felt the cold reach her arms.
Pulling down the sleeves off her uniform she reached the middle and looked around at the bookcases.
Another vividly coloured book caught her eye. This one was blue.

"Charley," Valley said and he finally looked up from how he had been looking at some books.

He walked up to her and looked at the book she pointed out.

"Let's see where it goes."

Valley sighed. "We still need to be cautious."

"Come on, it'll just be another door—"

"No," Valley crossed her arms, "It won't, I mean, chance would say—"

"I know, but I'm the glass half full kinda guy." Charley gave Valley a smile, "Let's just see what it does."

Valley rolled her eyes. "Sure, but if we die it's your fault."

Excitedly Charley pulled the book halfway off the shelve, and then the room started shaking.

Her eyes wide, Valley pointed at the door, "Say, maybe we should go—"

Charley already pushed her out of the square of bookcases and they hurried to the door.

They looked back to see what had happened, and Valley stopped in her amazement. Behind them a white circle appeared in the air.

"We should leave," Charley urged, but Valley shook her head.

"I've read about this." Valley told Charley about how she had read about portals. "It's a portal, I need to know how they work—"

"Someone might come out of the damn thing," Charley said with a frown, "We should leave."

They stood one moment more as the portal started to fill in with a pale white, lighting the books around it.

Valley kept staring before suddenly someone did step through it.
Suddenly she got pushed through the door and with a loud slam the door closed behind the two.

"What was that?" Valley asked and Charley glared at her.

"A thing that came out of the portal." Charley's voice sounded annoyed.
He grabbed Valley's arm and dragged her along though the dark room. The wall was the only thing to direct them back. The silence was ringing as Charley panicked a bit. Who was that person? Why were they there?

A loud crack suddenly echoed through the hallway and Valley flinched.

"What was that?"

Charley looked back, but the dark didn't let him see.
"I don't know," he muttered and the two listened to the silence. "It sounded a bit like wood..."

"Like a door?" Valley guessed nervously. The echo of a loud footstep came after.

Charley's eyes went wide. Was it the person from the portal?

Valley turned back a bit, but Charley didn't let go of her arm as he started running.
Only when the secret door closed shut behind them did the two stop running, leaning against it while puffing for air.

A silence fell over the two.

"That was sick."

Charley looked at Valley with two wide eyes.
"How can you say that— weren't you the one who was reluctant to even go in there!?"

Valley chuckled but her face fell when someone walked up to them.

"I see you've found the door."
A shine fell over his orange goggles as he looked down at the two with a sharp glare.
Toby put a hand to one of his hatchets, not pulling it out of his belt yet.

Charley awkwardly looked around as Valley shrugged, still a bit cheerful from the adrenaline rush.

"You weren't supposed to find it," Toby made it more clear.

Charley nodded, but Valley shrugged again. "It was hidden rather poorly."
A violent twitch made Toby's arm pop.
Still Valley didn't back down as her curiosity took over. "What was that portal? Where does it lead to?"

Toby glared at the two.
"I'm supposed to kill you," his voice sounded harsh. His hand dropped and he sighed. "But I'm not."

Charley blinked in surprise.
"Why not?"

As Toby looked at Valley he sighed.
"I can't lose another team member."

The weight of the words slowly got to Valley's chest and she nodded slightly stupidly.

As Toby told them not to get near the door again, and to never mention it, Charley was only too quick to nod. How had they just gotten saved by a Proxie? They were supposed to be dead by now!

Charley sure would be cautious around secret doors from now on.

Valley followed Toby out of the library.

"Can I ask a question? Not about what just happened, but..."

Toby slowed down a bit and allowed Valley to walk next to him.

By now the sun was rather low, the light coming through the windows on their right, giving the hallway a soft golden glow.
"You can just kill me," Valley said, "There was no reason not to."

Toby didn't say anything as he kept walking.

When they reached a more crowded area, Toby spoke up again.
"The other three are a bother. Stephen has potential, sure, but he's not right in his head, I can't work with that." Toby was too hard with his words, Valley frowned as she found herself disagreeing a bit. They weren't all doomed, right?
"I need someone with their head above water, someone who can learn to be a murderer, a killer."

As a new silence fell over them, Valley's eyes dropped down to the ground.
"It's not really fair to say..."

A chuckle left Toby's lips.
"Life isn't fair."
They reached the dormitories. As they walked in it was like nothing off this happened as Toby put up his cheerful smile. The silent threat remained though. One word of the door, and they were dead for real.
