—Valley POV—
The life of a normal high schooler usually involved fears of sports. Well in my case my fear went to being send to fight on the soccer field. It would be fucked up in a normal school, but now it was a fight to the death with a weapon each. Not that it's a competition but that was a little worse, I think.
It had become a punishment to get in line to fight, as well as a possible choice you can make if you feel confident, which only the stupid did.
Rapidly people seemed to just... disappear. Even if we knew where they were just dead.
Myself, I just hoped Charley didn't get near one of those fights. He and his friend, neither of them could get near it.
Because Toby had left the dormitory, I sat reading on my own. It was nice, the entire room to myself for a moment.
My body ached from the continues training the last few days but I knew I was improving, so that made me able to sit back and relax. Toby was kind of still angry at me, and the other three of the team are mean. Reading was my escape from their taunts. I know I'll be the next one to go, but I'd rather not hear it out loud all the time.
While I sat reading my book, I almost missed someone walking in.
I flinched when I noticed it, but relaxed when he ignored me. Dorcas always seemed the least harmful. Actually, he always tried to keep Stephen's eyes away from me. Elijah though, he was a bit of a rat, like Peter Pettigrew he would constantly take the larger teams' side, which was Stephen's. I doubt he would be loyal anymore if he'd get the chance to side any of the pastas.
Realising I had gotten distracted from my book, Dorcas gave me a short smile. I smiled back as polite as I was and turned back to my book.
"What are you reading?"
I looked up again, a bit annoyed that I now had to talk.
"I'm trying to read something about inter dimensional portals— but it's mostly hypothetical."
Dorcas didn't drop his smile. "Sounds fun, do you suppose it's real?"
"What is?"
"Other realms? How would that work?"
As Dorcas seemed interested, I frowned.
"Are you here to be a bully?"
As if a dagger had stabbed him Dorcas's eyes widened in realisation.
"No— it's not like that, I'm just interested."
I gave him a skeptical look as he wiped a hand through his hair.
"Fine then," I gave him a new smile, "But it's a long explanation, and it's mostly theoretical."
As Dorcas sat down at the edge of my bed he nodded excitedly. Suddenly we were talking and strayed off from the subject. I laughed as Dorcas made some jokes.
When Dorcas left again I was left confused.
What just happened? Wasn't he supposed to be a jerk?
I guess...
— Charley POV—
Classes had been a bore, but Jeff managed to make our group's lives a living hell.
From training until 1 in the morning to getting beaten up by each other to test our pain tolerance to stabbing dead bodies to test technique.
Jeff didn't understand limits.
As Valley trained hard as well, we didn't talk much outside of class. In class, we were buddies in a way off having the same secret. It was kind of exciting.
Anthony though, for some reason he didn't like it each time I went to sit next to Valley.
"What do you see in her?" He would say. "She's just another girl."
