"Alright class. Today was supposed to be the day we got a closer look at the rare crystal I had found not too long ago. But as we all know, I no longer have possession of the crystal." My professor sighs, shaking his head. "All that time studying that thing, wasted." He mumbles.
"Yeah, well maybe if Hyperion was better at his job, we'd be able to continue with our lessons." Lafayette says, rolling his eyes. I look back at him, raising an eyebrow.
"Now, now, we all know Hyperion is doing his best to get them back. We're just lucky none of us have been badly injured by this guy." Professor Lee says.
Lafayette crosses his arms. "Not yet, anyway. We don't know what this guy is planning." He says. "I'm just saying, maybe Hyperion shouldn't have disappeared for so long. Then he'd already have returned the crystals."
I open my mouth to argue back, but am quickly interrupted.
"Oh, come on, Laf. Sure, he's a superhero, but underneath that he's a normal guy, too. Maybe he just wanted to live a peaceful life." Elizabeth, the girl who always sits front row in every class, says.
"When you're born with powers, you don't really get that luxury." Lafayette argues.
I turn back in my chair and sigh softly. He was right, I never should have taken that break. I wouldn't be so rusty. Maybe I would have already caught him by now.
"I mean, poor John here did get attacked by the guy. And where was Hyperion? Nowhere to be found." I hear my name being called and I quickly perk up.
"I mean, it happened so suddenly, nobody knew about it. I mean, nobody could really even see, it was pitch black." I say. As I'm saying it, I think about it carefully.
No one could have possibly seen that I was getting attacked. How did Lafayette get to me so fast?
I mean, the lights did turn back on by the time I was actually being attacked, but did Lafayette really just happen to look in the window?
Or did he know I was attacked because..
I glance over at him. He really doesn't like me. Well, not me as in John. Me as in Hyperion. Could it be possible..?
"Okay, okay. We do not need to be discussing this matter right now. This is chemical engineering, not speech and debate. Everyone, get out your notes from last week, we're going to have a pop quiz."
The entire class groans and I just sit there, thinking about all of my past interactions with Lafayette.
Timeskip brought to you by the devil not bargaining
"Hey, Lafayette!" I call, running to catch up with him.
He turns and looks at me, smiling. "Hey, John. Feel free to call me Laf, I know it's a lot easier."
"Right, Laf. I was just thinking about what you were saying in class." I start.
"What? About how cats are superior to dogs?"
"No, the thing about Hyperion. Honestly, you're right." I say. I had to hear more of what he thought. And what he knew. "I mean, did you hear how badly he got injured at that movie theater last weekend?"
That hadn't been in the news. The only people who know about it are some of the people who were at the theater, and the guy who electrocuted me.
He looks around and then pulls me to the side. "I did hear about that, but how did you hear about that?" He asks.
I shrug gently. "I was at the theaters that night. One of the employees saw it happen, and was talking about it on my way out." I say, not actually lying. The employee was telling his coworker about it. It was kind of embarrassing hearing people talk about you getting your ass whooped.
