A/N: _L0ding_ Helped me with some details of this chapter (which I always appreciate!)
Raft. It had been a couple of days since Louise and Ben had reunited with the rest of the campers. And now, after they figured out their food issues, how much to get and where to get it from, it was time to figure out how they all could possibly get home safely all by themselves, with no help from anyone.
They chalked up a few ideas, literally. They had a green chalk board with a pieces of white chalk that they used to draw and scribble on the board. On one side, they kept track of the amount of fruits and other supplies they had left and on the other, they had Yasmina draw out some of their ideas as Darius labeled them. The most practical idea was a raft.
The basic supplies for a good raft consisted of a structurally sound base and a large enough sail to catch the wind, and things to paddle with if they needed it. It wouldn't take too long to cut down branches or find fallen down logs. Hap, the tour guide with Tiff and Mitch, had machetes and other valuable tools for them to use for this exact moment.
"Kayaks," Louise mentioned during one of their meetings. "The ones from the river ride?" Darius asked. "They already float!" Louise replied. "They'd help with steering too because of their narrow fronts." Louise explained. "But, they're still in the Mosasaurus enclosure." Kenji pointed out.
"Yasmina almost got eaten the last time." Kenji said, "I remember, dingus." Yasmina hit the back of his head. "Ow!" Kenji exclaimed. "Let's hear her out." Darius said. "We could attach the kayaks to the bottom of the raft and build onto them." Louise continued, "None of us are skilled enough to paddle on the kayaks ourselves all the way back to Costa Rica." Louise explained.
"The Mosasaurus is nocturnal, right, Darius?" Louise asked him. "It normally is...But it's been off its feeding schedule ever since the evacuation, so there's no telling if it'll be awake or not." Darius replied.
"But if it's hungry, wouldn't it have less energy?" Brooklynn asked. "Or would it be wide awake waiting for something to drop by its tank?"
Darius thought for a moment, "We can hope that it has less energy than when we first interacted with it." Darius replied. "Maybe Ms. or Mr. Mosa is enjoying its vacation! No Mosasaurus shows, all the more reason for relaxation!" Kenji suggested.
"I'm not sure dinosaurs have 'vacation' in their vocabulary." Yasmina sarcastically remarked.
Louise let out a quiet chuckle at Yaz's response and Kenji seemed to be bothered that she was laughing at Yasmina and not him. "We could give it a shot." Darius concluded. "Camp meeting over!"
"If we act fast, it'll be like we were never there." Darius said as they all began to walk to Main Street.
"If we get eaten, I'm blaming it on Louise." Kenji joshed. "I hope you get eaten first, Kenji." Louise joshed right back at him. "Nobody is getting eaten." Darius said. "If we fed Tiff and Mitch to the Mosa, it might not be as hungry...." Ben suggested.
"You're never going to let that go, are you, Ben?" Yasmina asked him, "Nope!" Ben replied.
They had reached the Mosasaurus' tank that was surrounded by the stadium, the kayaks were still in the water but not where they had left them. "That's a problem." Kenji said. "We'll just swim to them," Darius whispered, "The Mosasaurus hasn't suspected us yet." Darius added, still whispering.
"And now you've jinxed us!" Yasmina swung her head back in exaggeration. "If we swim with slow strokes, we won't be detected." Darius began.
"There's three kayaks, so only three of us have to get in the water." Darius explained, "Ben and Kenji, let's go." Darius looked over at Ben then at Kenji. "The rest of you, keep lookout and be ready to receive the kayaks." Darius ordered and neither Brooklynn, Sammy, Yasmina or Louise protested to that.
