It was finally the month for prom. Where people are getting asked left and right in the sweetest ways, girls going shopping for dresses or getting their nails done.
Aera had surprised Hanni with a promposal at school. She stood by her locker with a big bouquet of flowers and a poster that read "prom??" in pink marker with decoration around it. Of course Hanni said yes, Aera spinning her around in her arms out of excitement.
Sadly the first few weeks of the month, Hanni was on bed rest because of her top surgery. Aera would go and check on her after school and ballet practices when she could. And when she couldn't be there, she would FaceTime the girl. They would watch the same shows at the same time and eat snacks until one of them fall asleep.
Sometimes when Hanni was the first to fall asleep, Aera would just look at her and smile sleepily. Would she take screenshots of her sleeping? Of course she would, Hanni would never know.
But now that she was fully healed, her, Aera, Dae and Elijah decided to go out for a movie night together. They often hung out together like this, but hadn't in a while because they didn't wanna leave Hanni out.
Now, they had just arrived to the theater in Dae's car.
They walked into the theater, Aera and Hanni holding hands as the group walked up to the front counter.
They were seeing a horror film of some sort, Dae was the one who suggested it. Hanni wasn't very fond of scary movies, but reminded her that none of it was real.
"Alright it's my treat so get whatever you guys want", Dae announced as she pulled out her wallet. Everyone cheered, laughing quietly when people stared at them with annoyance.
After everyone got their snacks, they walked into the movie and found their seats.
As the movie began, not even 10 minutes in and there were already jump scares.
Some people gasped or nearly screamed at the scary scenes of the movie. One of the movie petrified Hanni.
A girl about their age was running away from the killer, but ended up falling to the floor as she tripped over something in the woods. As the killer slit her throat, Hanni whimpered as she hid in Aera's neck.
"Hey hey it's okay", Aera spoke softly. She didn't realize it would be this bad for her.
"Maybe it's the blood", she thought. The movie was quite gory, Aera was a bit disgusted herself. But, she knew Dae loved anything with gore or guts.
"Wanna get more snacks? I'm pretty sure I saw strawberry flavored kittcats when we were there", she whispered. Hanni came out of hiding with a little smile as she nodded.
The two girls excused themselves and headed back to get more snacks.
As they got up to the front counter, Hanni got excited seeing the strawberry kittcats.
"You can get them, pretty", Aera chuckled, finding it cute how excited the girl got with such simple things.
Hanni ordered the kittcat, insisting on paying for it herself but Aera was too stubborn to let her.
"Look, there's the fag now with his girlfriend", a boy spoke near the two girls.
Hanni froze at that, feeling her heart drop. It was the same group of boys that bullied her the first few days of school. Aera just wasn't aware of this and Hanni wanted to keep it that way for as long as she could.
"What did you just say?", Aera spoke, holding onto Hanni's hand tightly to comfort her.
"I said he's a fag, do you need me to spell it out for you?", the boy spit back. "I mean hell", he scoffed.
"No, but maybe you could explain to me why you can't mind your own business. Me and my girlfriend are trying to enjoy our night and we would hate to have to report five dumbass's for public harassment", Aera tutted, shaking her head in the process.
Hanni looked down at her feet with a smile, trying her best not to laugh.
"Or who knows, maybe I would enjoy it".
"No no no...w-we're sorry we'll leave you alone. H-Have a nice night ladies", the boys walked out of the theater in a hurry, bumping into people on the way out.
Hanni and Aera looked at each other, not able to contain their laughs any longer.
"You really are my hero, miss Park", Hanni teased, but truly meaning it. Aera was like her superhero, her favorite superhero. She protected her from all the transphobic people for villains in the world.
"I'll always be here to protect you, pretty. And don't ever listen to what they have to say", Aera replied, holding the girls hands in hers. "None of it is true, and you'll always be my girl".
Hanni couldn't take so much affection, so much love all at once. All she could is melt into the girls arms right there and then. Hugging her like she never wanted to let go, scared the girl would disappear into dust.
"I love you so much", Hanni cried into Aera's shoulder, soaking her sweater with her tears.
Aera stiffened a bit at her words, but soon felt her eyes become glossy themselves. She never she would hear those three words, but God was she wrong.
"I love you too, pretty".
