The next morning Vanessa meets Draco in the common room before heading down to the Great Hall with him, Crabbe and Goyle following close behind as per usual. She halfheartedly listens while he prattles on about Harry.
"I do hope he got expelled, you saw Snape and McGonagall, there's no way he isn't." He says almost too gleefully. There's a look of disappointment on his face when they walk into the Great Hall and see both Harry and Ron are sitting at their table. They settle at the Slytherin table and start piling food on their plates. "Unfortunate. I was hoping we also got rid of him and that useless ginger blood traitor."
"Did you forget I have red hair also?" She gives him a pointed look. "If you're going to talk about people you dislike so much I'd prefer if you didn't use descriptors that also apply to your friend."
"Oh please," Draco rolls his eyes. "I like your red hair." She flushes a bit, distracting herself by grabbing more food.
"If I recall correctly, you mistook me for one of those 'ginger blood-traitors' the first time we met." She looks at her from the corner of her eye. He stiffens slightly. She hardly looks up as the owls flutter in with the daily mail.
"Well yes, clearly I was mistaken. If I had known who you were I wouldn't have-"
"If I wasn't Harry's sister, would have treated me the same way you treat the Weasley's?" She interrupts him to ask. He opens his mouth to reply but both jump in their seat as a loud woman's voice cuts through the entire Great Hall.
"RONALD WEASLEY!"
A hush falls in the room. They whip their heads immediately to the Gryffindor table. Ron is sitting there looking utterly embarrassed, his face as red as the letter in his hand as he sinks low in his seat.
"-STEALINT THE CAR, I WOULDNT HAVE BEEN SURPRISED IF THEY EXPELLED YOU, YOU WAIT TILL I GET AHOLD OF YOU-"
Vanessa looks at Draco in shock, smacking her hands over her ears. Even covering them the words are clear as day. Draco is grinning ear to ear as he watches the scene unfold, it's as if he's watching his favorite show on the television. She briefly wonders if he's ever even seen a TV.
"-WHEN WE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM DUMBLEDORE LAST NIGHT, I THOUGHT YOUR FATHER WOULD DIE OF SHAME, WE DIDN'T BRING YOU UP TO BEHAVE LIKE THIS, YOU AND HARRY BOTH COULD HAVE DIED-
She can feel the vibrations of the screams around her, in her head, as it bounces around the hall. If the Dursley's could send whatever that thing is, she is sure they would just for the torment of it. She shudders at the thought of Uncle Vernon's already loud voice coming out of that thing. The screaming is already putting her on edge, Uncle Vernon's would bring her a panic attack.
"-FACING AN INQUIRY AT WORK, IT'S ENTIRELY UOUR FAULT AND IF YOU PUT ANOTHER TOE OUT OF LINE WE'LL BRING YOU STRAIGHT BACK HOME."
The envelope bursts into flames as a ringing silence fills the room. She removes her hands from her ears. Draco laughs maliciously as others around the hall laugh. Though slowly the usual babble of the students talking comes back.
"How embarrassing!" Draco laughs. "I couldn't show my face again after something like that!" Vanessa can only muster a half-hearted laugh, her anxiety racing through her.
She ate a few more bites of food before Snape came by with their course schedules. She's happy to take it, excited to start classes again. Her face falls only slightly seeing that Defense Against the Dark Arts is the first class of the day. While she finds the subject fascinating the thought of Gilderoy Lockhart being the teacher sounds almost unbearable.
They head to their first class. Lockhart is beaming at the front of the classroom in turquoise robes, flashing his "award winning" smile. She and Draco share a knowing look as they take a seat, Crabbe and Goyle sitting behind me them.
