I totally thought we would be in an underground lair, or in the middle of a forest. We are in a literal mansion! Everything matched together perfectly, almost like the furniture and decorations were made for the house. It had a dark aesthetic, but that was expected. The door we entered through was in the living room. He had a very large, flat screen TV mounted on his gray wall. His main color of the home was gray with a blue undertone.
He had a white couch, but it was one of those nice ones where you could mix and match where they went and how they're set up, if that makes any sense. And around that couch, were two egg chairs, with a little footrest in front of them. He had a modern bookshelf full of books, including a bible. If he's so religious, he wouldn't do this, right? Doesn't it say something like "life for life" or whatever? I don't know, my family wasn't strict on religion.
"Is that a bible?" I asked.
"No, it's a picture book my little cousin left here," he replied with a chuckle, slowly followed by a frown. Almost as if he had some sort of bad experience with religion.
We took a tour around his home. He had a literal workout room in his basement, with a theater right next to it! He showed me my room upstairs on the second floor, which was right next to his. Asher's room looked like it was made straight out of hell, but I expected nothing less.
"Well, that's the whole house. If you need something, I'll be in my room, the workout room, or the kitchen. I'll help you unpack and maybe I could learn a little more about you?"
"I'd like to ask some questions about you, sir," I said with a smile. I saw his whole mood change while I said that.
"Alright, fire away," he replied. We got done unpacking my stuff and afterwards, we made our way to his living room without breaking conversation. Asher and I talked for like two hours. Then he made some popcorn and we watched a movie. He grabbed us some extra blankets and pillows. I was having such a good time that I didn't notice the twenty seven missed calls from Hailee. I called her back before the movie started.
"Ezra, where the hell are you," she asked in panic.
"Relax! I'm safe, where Lukas won't find me. I didn't want to go home right away because he'd see me."
"Where are you?"
I asked Asher if I could share where I was.
"I'm with Asher," I told her.
"Good. Lukas seems to be lashing out. I hear him banging on the walls and yelling," she said innocently.
"Are you sure he's lashing out? Or is he celebrating," I asked jokingly.
Lee had a gasp of realization, "That actually makes a lot of sense. I'll let you guys celebrate too, if you know what I mean. Have fun!"
"Yeah, you too," I said. Asher started the movie and we sat on the couch with our layers of blankets. I noticed that I was scooting closer to Asher. I think I just feel safe around him. I was starting to get tired, and I realized that my head was laying on his chest and his arm was around me; his other hand was playing with my hair.
"I know you're getting tired," he said softly. I grabbed his hand that was around me.
"I don't know what you're talking about." He let out a chuckle and held me closer.
He looked at me with a smile, "You do realize that if you fall asleep, I'm gonna carry you up to your room, right? You'll be stiff if you're asleep on this couch."
"Looks like I'm pulling an all-nighter." I said.
"You're such a little rat."
"Good."
The movie started to come to an end, or maybe it was my attention span. But I did notice one thing. I think I found his soft spot. Do I know exactly what it is? Not a single clue. But I think I weaseled my way into his heart. And he did the same thing to me. He is amazing. I still cannot believe how quickly I forgot about Lukas at that moment. But I was glad that I did. I don't deserve to know such a wonderful person like Asher. But I can't bring my guard down too low. I was starting to zone out and fall asleep. My eyes were getting heavy and my mind was blank. Asher let something slip out of his mouth and I woke up real quick when I processed it.
"I'm gonna go use the restroom, ok babe?"
I replied, "Don't leave, it'll get cold- wait what did you say?"
His face was beet red.
"Uh I really need to pee, I'll come back in less than 30 seconds."
He scurried away like the little rat he is. I sat there and I honestly thought about a future with him. That was something I never did with Lukas. My thoughts were interrupted by lights that were previously turned off, now flickering. I was so beyond freaked out. I quietly took the biggest blanket and hid in the corner that was covered by the couch. Asher walked out of the bathroom. I heard his footsteps but I had my head buried in the blanket as I sat there curled up in a ball. Then I felt a large, warm hand on my kneecap. I looked up, shaking. It was Asher of course. He looked worried.
"I-I'm sorry. I didn't think you would react like that."
"Oh no it's my fault, I'm really gullible," I said, still shaky.
He pulled the couch away from the corner and took my hand so I didn't fall over. He left me standing there with my large blanket and he moved the couch back and sat down. We literally just looked at eachother. Then he patted his hand on his lap, signaling that he wanted me to sit there. I sat on his lap and hugged him, not even looking in the direction of the tv. His strong arm was wrapped around me. Then I must have fallen asleep or something.
