Once Zed and Xavier were moved to a room, they put a plastic cover over the door. Nurses had to dress from head to toe in new clothes and were sprayed with something before they could enter. Everyone had to wear a mask that entered their room.
Zed laughed as I stood on the other side. "Look, babe, I am like the boy in the bubble, but I have company."
"I see that. How are you feeling, baby?"
"Tired and a little sore, but other than that, I feel okay. How are you holding up?"
"I am fine. How are you feeling, Xavier?"
"Just tired and a little weak."
"Yeah, the doctor said you may feel like that for a little bit."
"Did he say when I might get to come home?"
"He said it would be several more weeks. I'm so sorry, sweetie. I know that wasn't the news you were hoping for. Your Dad and I have already contacted a doctor for you to keep checkups with. He's one of the top-rated pediatric oncologists on the East Coast."
"That's good. So, how are you and my mom getting along with all this?"
"We are getting along fine. We are actually going to fly to Florida, get some of your clothes and stuff, and then fly to New York so she can see where you will be living."
Zed looked at me, "Tessa, are you going to be okay going without me?"
"Babe, we will be fine. Hardin is flying with us. I am going to check on our kids and stop by my office to sign some things and check in with Trevor. Then we will probably fly back tomorrow."
"That sounds like fun. I am excited to go to New York and see your house."
"It's your house now, too, son." Xavier smiled at Zed when he said that.
"So, Xavier, would you prefer a room upstairs on the floor the kids are on or a room in the basement where you would be the only one down there? The basement has three bedrooms, a rec room, a living room, and its own kitchen. The second floor has two spare bedrooms. The biggest is far enough away from the kids, and it's really good sized."
"I lived in my parent's basement until I graduated high school and went off to college. It stayed the same until they sold it to move closer to us. I enjoyed my privacy, so when I started Middle school, I finally talked them into moving downstairs."
"Can I have a room in the basement, and if I don't like it, move upstairs?"
"Sure, listen, our house is your house. You are our son, and you have free reign of the house. The only room that is off-limits is our bedroom, which goes for our other kids as well. If you want, you can have a room downstairs and upstairs."
"Thanks, Dad and Mama Tessa." He looked like he was afraid he wasn't allowed to call me that. I smiled as Tessa cried.
"You are very welcome, son. Okay, our flight is soon. Mom and Dad are staying here in our rental. They will come during the day, and I will let you know when we will return. You two behave and don't be flirting with the nurses. I love you both and will be back soon."
"Be safe, baby. I love you, and we will try not to flirt with the nurses, but I may have to flirt a little to get extra jello."
"Bye, Mama Tessa, be careful. I will make sure he doesn't flirt, but I can't make any promises I won't. I, um, I love you too."
"Lord help me. I have two, actually three of them."
She, Sasha, and Hardin left. She gave Ken and Karen the keys to the house. They left and took a Uber to the airport. They flew to Florida and picked up the rental car. Hardin drove, and when they pulled up, Sasha looked embarrassed.
