This was the most important day of her life. Not even the day she graduated from the nursing program could compare to this day.
She had been dreaming about this moment for so long, that she had to pinch herself, to remind herself that this wasn't a dream and that this was really happening.
"Butterfly, are you okay?"
Butterfly was pulled out of her reverie by the gentle voice of her mother, Dottie.
"I'm Fine. I should ask if you're okay."
Butterfly heard her mother choking back her emotions when she talked. It almost made Butterfly cry, but she held the tears in. She didn't want to ruin her make-up.
She turned around in her seat, to see that her mother had tears in her eyes, which were threatening to fall. "Mama, are you going to be like this the whole time?"
Butterfly already knew the answer to the question before she asked it. Her mother would indeed, cry the whole time. Her mother was invested in this day just as much as she was.
Dottie wiped away a tear from her caramel-colored cheek, and said, "This is your wedding day, of course, I'm going to be crying the whole time."
Butterfly smiled gently at her mother, as the hairdresser, Nichole, tended to her hair. She was giving Butterfly a bun, with a braid wrapped around the front, adding bangs. Her make-up was flawlessly done, accentuating her almond-colored eyes, and high cheekbones.
"This is supposed to be a happy time, yet you're over there crying like you're at a funeral." Butterfly chuckled lightly when Dottie gave her an annoyed look.
"Leave her alone. Don't worry, Mrs. D. I got your back."
Butterfly shook her head at her best friend and maid of honor, Lisa. Lisa was always taking her mother's side, whenever she and Butterfly were having a discussion.
Lisa had her small hands in fists and she was throwing jabs my way like she was Muhammad Ali. She had a goofy grin plastered across her face while trying not to laugh. Before long, everyone busted out laughing from Lisa's antics.
Butterfly couldn't help but laugh at Lisa. She was so theatrical at times. "Girl, sit your little petite butt down somewhere."
Everyone laughed once again, and Lisa narrowed her eyes at Butterfly. But she still had the corners of her mouth turned up. She put a hand on her hip and said, "The men love them some of this petite butt." She moved her hands along the length of her body, to get her point across.
Butterfly put her slender, manicured hands up to her ears. She couldn't believe her best-friend said that. Well, she could believe it. Lisa was always saying things like that. "TMI, Lisa."
Lisa flicked her long, wavy, jet-black hair across her shoulders. "Hey, I just had to let y'all know what's up."
Butterfly just shook her head, while Nichole did a final touch up. "All done," she replied.
Butterfly admired herself in the mirror. She couldn't help but smile back at her reflection. She turned around and gave Nichole a hug. "Thank you so much, Nichole. You did an amazing job."
"I'm glad you love it. Just don't ruin it, when you go off on your honeymoon." Nichole winked at her, while Butterfly's cheeks burned with embarrassment.
Dottie clapped her hands and said, "It's time for you to put on your wedding dress."
"You look so beautiful," Dottie stated, as Butterfly stood in front of her, with the wedding dress on.
