As lunch break arrived, Evelyn, James, and I made our way to our usual spot—the P.E. locker room. It wasn't anything special, but James's father being the P.E. teacher gave us some special leverage.

"Where's your hot friend?" James chuckled as soon as I sat down.

"He said he wanted to stay in class," I murmured, feeling a bit disappointed.

"Perhaps he doesn't want you to feel like some kind of babysitter. He's probably going to try spreading his wings here a little," Evelyn explained as she dug into her flavorless yogurt, something that still disgusts me to this day.

"What's with that look on your face? Are you worried about him?" James added, noticing my expression.

"Not at all, he's old enough to take care of himself", I said aloud, bearing mixed feelings, something about him just makes me feel uneasy but why do I feel a bit concerned.

"How'd you guys even meet plus why'd you never introduce him to us?",  James questioned.

I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts before explaining, "Our parents are like best friends. Ronin and I were born a few days apart, and ever since, we've always hung out as we grew up. But because of some family issues, he's forced to stay here with us."

"Shouldn't you be happy, then? A childhood friend now living with you sounds great," James remarked.

"Yeah, you don't seem too fond of him, especially not after he beat your score on that test," Evelyn added, expressing her confusion.

I leaned against the cold locker, my gaze fixed on the ceiling with suspicious white stains scattered about. "We had a small falling out, it wasn't that major. We still hung out a few times after that."

"Besides that, he's just so different from before. He used to be nerdy, annoying the hell out of my friends. Not a looker, nor good at video games or, per se, intellectual," I explained.

"Ok, Mr. Perfect," Evelyn scoffed.

*

"So, you think he's like perfect now or something, which is quite ironic," James gave Evelyn a glance. "People usually think you're perfect, you know."

"Bullshit, I'm far from it," I retorted.

"Yeah, we know it's bullshit. It's our job as friends to exploit and expose your flaws," James said with an innocent smile, though his words sounded slightly maniacal.

"So what if he's better at video games or English? I bet you're still the best kicker in rugby," Evelyn giggled.

"And Ronin doesn't have the most pretty girl in school falling head over heels for him," James added, wearing a smirk.

"Yeah, they're right. I doubt he's better than me in sports, but is Mia really head over heels for me? Shucks," I said, feeling a blush creep up at the thought of her. Yet, I couldn't let earlier's incident escape my mind—when she ignored me for Ronin. "Maybe I'm overthinking," I excused, trying to push the thought aside.

The school day ended, and I stayed behind alongside James for rugby practice. After a while of banter in the bathroom, we finally got changed and made our way to the field. Stupidly enough, James forgot to pack his socks, so he came up with the genius idea of giving him one of mine.

"We became the one-sock wonders," as he called it, laughing at our predicament as we headed to practice.

"Think fast!" a boy yelled out, throwing the ball right towards me. I managed to grab it just in the nick of time.

"Nice reflexes, ladies. Keep it up," William muttered, wearing that arrogant smirk of his. Despite his arrogance, he had the skills to back it up, being the team captain and the head boy.

As James would usually say, "The only way he became head boy is because the elections are more of a beauty contest than an actual leadership one."

"That douche can go fuck himself," James sighed as we began our cardio and basic warmups.

"Sorry I'm late," Ronin appeared, catching us by surprise.

"Of course, he's going to play rugby. I mean, look at him," I thought aloud, even though I didn't want him here. I couldn't deny that he'd make a useful asset.

"You're the new fella, right? Even if you're new, I'll have to punish you for being late. Two laps around the field," William demanded.

"Alright," Ronin said nonchalantly as he began jogging.

William's surprised face at Ronin's answer was pretty funny; he probably expected some resistance.

"Your break is over, get your asses back here. All of you have to do two laps around, including you, new guy," William explained.

"This is my opportunity to find out whether I'm better at sports or not, and I'm sure we all know the answer," I said confidently, wearing a smirk as we gathered, ready to run.
