"Liam, we probably should get going," James said as he stuck his head inside of my room. Instinctively, Ronin scooted away from me, his focus on the game.
"Yeah, I'm coming," I replied, tearing my eyes away from Ronin, who seemed engrossed in the game. We made it to the gate, the moon shining brightly above us as we walked through the house. I noticed that everyone had separated to various corners of the house. William and my dad were in the living room watching sports, Mom was in the kitchen doing some damage control with William's parents, yet I didn't see Mia.
"That was some final feast type shit," James chuckled, his humor always managing to lighten the mood.
"Liam, I wish we could do more. I was waiting for him to say some shit I could directly counter, but things definitely went too personal too quickly," Evelyn explained, wrapping her arms around me in a comforting hug.
"You guys did enough by just being there," I chuckled, grateful for their support.
"Hey, did you guys see Mia?"
"I believe I saw Cinderella wander of into your backyard, James mentioned. "Why would she go there?".
I eventually said goodbye to both James and Evelyn as they set out. I began searching the house for Evelyn, yet there was no sign of her. Finally, following James's words, I glanced from the kitchen window, which led to the backyard. It was going to be hard spotting her black dress in the middle of the night, yet I spotted not only her but someone else. "Is that Ronin?" My eyes widened as I felt a sense of anger and confusion boiling.
Ronin stood against the wall as Mia slowly advanced towards him, landing a kiss on his lips. I felt dread. "This can't be happening."
"What the fuck is going on!" I yelled aloud, clenching my fist as I ambushed the pair.
"Liam, wait, I can explain. She forced herself onto me," Ronin tried to explain, yet his words didn't reach me, not in that moment.
"Liam, what are you talking about? We were just chilling?" She wore that innocent smile of hers, yet there was nothing innocent about her.
"Don't play dumb. I fucking saw everything. Mia was the only reason you came here because of Ronin?" My voice ached in pain. Mia, the girl I fell for, kissed Ronin, the guy I couldn't stand.
"Firstly, we aren't even in a relationship, Liam. You're so obsessive, god," she rolled her eyes. "So this is the true you," I thought.
"Shut up, Mia," I grabbed hold of Ronin's shirt, anger seething through my eyes. Ronin wasn't angry; his eyes were filled with uncertainty and confusion.
"You come back being all cold and shit. And you had the audacity to say you don't have a fucking vendetta. Ronin, since you came, you proved to be better at fucking everything. Games, school, and even fucking sports. Now you steal the person I love right in front of me. How do you think I'm supposed to feel, huh?"
*
Ronin gently pushed me off without any effort. "Liam, how do you expect a guy who fucking recently lost his dad would act, all cheery like? Every day, I struggled with my emotions. Your fits surely didn't help at all. And do you wanna know why fucking why I'm so good at everything now? You were my role model. I wanted to be like you so badly, smart, good-looking, good at everything."
"I'm your what?" My eyes widened.
"Hey, Liam, we came back to hear our phones, silly us," James and Evelyn's eyes widened, seeing the predicament.
"Wait, you stole away Mia," Evelyn said in a disappointed tone, her eyes squinted at Ronin.
"I knew this douche was bad news," James added.
"First of all, why do you all act like Liam owns me? You fuckers are that dense," Mia raised her tone.
Evelyn walked up to Mia, wearing a cold expression. "Mia, how big of a bimbo can you possibly be? You knew that Liam liked you. Were all those hints just to manipulate him?"
I didn't know what to feel. Just when Ronin opened up, all of this had to happen.
"You're not off the hook, Liam. You turned Ronin, a guy who's struggling with loss, into some kind of a monster," Evelyn shook her head in disapproval.
"What's the commotion about?" William came outside as he wrapped his arm around Mia.
*
"Let's get out of here, babe," she giggled.
"Babe?" We all said in shock; even Ronin was startled.
"Wait, I'm not done with you!" I yelled, but William kept walking, his cold gaze never faltering.
"Do you have a problem with my girlfriend?" His voice cut through the air like ice, making me feel smaller than ever. That was his specialty, making others feel insignificant, and he was succeeding with me right now.
With heavy hearts and disappointed expressions, everyone eventually dispersed. Evelyn and James seemed to be disappointed in me, and Ronin probably despised me too.
I slithered my way into my room, feeling like I was being consumed by flames of guilt and regret. "I'm such a fucking asshole," I concluded, collapsing onto my bed. Ronin was fast asleep, but a part of me wanted to wake him up, to talk things over and apologize for my behavior. But my intrusive thoughts held me back.
"I'm sorry," I whispered into the darkness, the weight of my actions heavy on my chest as I slowly drifted into an uneasy sleep.
The morning dawned anew, and I was fortunate enough to switch off my phone alarm, not that it would matter on Saturday. With my eyes finally open, I noticed that Ronin was missing.
But what caught my attention was a message from Mom. "You're grounded, use this time to reflect on your actions," I read her text.
I couldn't even feel angry; I honestly deserved it. I searched the house for Ronin, even daring to peek into the gym and the shower, yet he wasn't there.
The door slammed open, and it was Ronin, back from a run, sweat drenching his tight shirt.
"Hey, can we talk?" I asked as he passed me as if I were invisible.
