"Are you boys up yet?" My mother's voice echoed from the doorway, her feet tapping anxiously on the floor."Shit, what time is it?" I exclaimed, rubbing my eyes. The room seemed to spin.
"I'm awake," Ronin called out from his bed.
"You boys are going to be late! Chop chop, finish up now," she commanded.
As we both hurried to get ready, Ronin shot me a smirk that was contagious; I couldn't help but chuckle. He looked so mischievous right now, cheeks flushing red.
After showering and donning our school uniforms, I headed to the kitchen to make myself some coffee, and there was my dad, calmly sipping coffee and flipping through a newspaper. Our eyes met, and he gave me a small wave; I nodded in acknowledgment.
My feelings about him were all over the place, but I hadn't seen Mom this happy in a while.
With Mom in a good mood, she drove us to school and dropped us off by the gate.
"I'm glad to see your dad's around now," Ronin remarked.
"I guess," I replied nonchalantly, my gazed focus on the dirt.
"What took you guys?" James appeared from behind a tree, looking annoyed.
"We overslept," I said, glancing at Ronin.
"You're finally here," Evelyn greeted us as we entered the classroom.
"Is the plan still in action?" I asked nervously, taking my seat next to Ronin.
"I'm not sure if this is the right approach," Evelyn expressed concern.
"This is what that jerk deserves," James interjected.
"Many people are missing," Ronin observed, scanning the room.
"Yeah, a lot of the victims aren't here. I feel bad for them," James said sympathetically as Evelyn placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"We're doing this for us and for them. Remember that," I said firmly.
"Hopefully this doesn't stop the school from holding the winter ball", James mused.
Evelyn rose her hand giving James a swift slap against his groin. "That's not important now", she scolded.
The classroom door swung open, and Mr. Green appeared, papers in hand, a sly smirk on his face.
"Looks like it's pop quiz time!" he announced cheerfully, to the dismay of the class.
"Just to exercise your young developing minds," he added, distributing the papers.
After several minutes, Mr. Green's phone alarm went off, signaling the end of the quiz.
"Dude, I didn't understand any of that," James exclaimed.
"Same, but it's just a pop quiz. Who cares?" Ronin sighed.
"You don't understand, man. My mom wants all my scores. Even if it's a pop quiz, I can't hide it. She'll find out somehow," James panicked.
"You're overreacting," I scolded.

Mr. Green began grading the quizzes, squinting at one paper. "That must be mine," James whispered in a panic.
"The highest scores are Liam, then Ronin, and third place goes to Evelyn. The rest of you can do much better," Mr. Green announced.
James's expression fell after the announcement.
"Guess I beat you this time," I teased Ronin.
Ronin leaned in and whispered in my ear, "Just you wait until it's an actual test. Then you're screwed," he chuckled.
