just a friend?

You wiped the counter, trying to focus on anything but the emotions swirling inside you. The diner was mostly empty, giving your mind too much space to wander. Taking a break, you leaned against the cool metal, staring out the large front windows. Across the street, your best friend Rosie laughed with a group of friends, the smile you loved so much lighting up her whole face.

For years, the two of you had been inseparable. Through every hardship and victory, she was right by your side. But recently, things felt different, and you didn't know why. Late nights watching movies turned into stolen glances when she wasn't looking. Her casual hugs left your heart racing. You tried pushing the feelings down, convinced it was just a silly crush that would fade, but it only grew stronger each day.

Sighing, you pushed away from the counter to help the only customers, an elderly couple in the back booth. As you refilled their coffees, the door chimed, announcing new arrivals. Speaking of the devil, Rosie spotted you from the entrance and waved, dragging her friends over to your section.

"Y/N, I'm starving! What do you recommend?" Rosie beamed up at you, not noticing your flustered state.

Quickly composing yourself, you launched into the specials, hoping your cheeks weren't as red as they felt. Her friends laughed and talked loudly, pulling you out of your thoughts. Maybe being around her like normal would help stamp out these feelings for good.

Later, as the dinner rush died down, you finally had a chance to chat with Rosie while she waited for her food.

"How was the show?" you asked, leaning against the counter across from her.

"It was so fun! The dance practice really wore me out, though. I'm glad I decided to stop by and see you afterward."

It was a simple statement, but it made your heart swell.

You were about to reply when her friend Lisa slid in next to her.

"Rosie, are you ready to head to the club after we eat? I heard they have a great DJ spinning tonight."

Rosie's face lit up. "That sounds like a plan! Y/N, you should join us after your shift. Please say you'll come. It'll be more fun with you there."

She turned those puppy-dog eyes on you that you could never resist.

You hesitated, not sure if hanging out with her drunk at a club was the best idea right now. But how could you deny that face?

"Alright, I'll meet you guys there later. Now go enjoy your food before it gets cold!"

Waving goodbye, you rushed to finish your side work, hoping the night would be innocent fun like normal. But something told you things were about to change, whether you were ready or not.

A few hours later, freshly showered and changed, you made your way to the bustling club. Loud music pumped through the large space as colorful lights flashed to the beat. Scanning the dance floor, you spotted Rosie's bright pink hair easily through the crowd. She grinned and waved enthusiastically when she spotted you, pulling you into a tight hug the moment you reached the group.

"I'm so glad you came!" she yelled in your ear to be heard over the music.

Her floral perfume surrounded you like a warm hug.

You smiled, trying to ignore how good it felt to be this close to her. Lisa handed you a drink, which you accepted gratefully, needing the liquid courage.

As the night wore on, you found yourself laughing and dancing freely with Rosie and the girls. The alcohol dulled your anxious thoughts, letting you truly relax and enjoy yourself. Before long, Rosie insisted the two of you had to dance together, grabbing your hands and pulling you deeper into the sea of bodies.
