settling down

The afternoon sun filtered through the sheer curtains of your apartment, casting golden streaks across the living room floor. The scent of Roseanne's perfume lingered in the air, a soft floral mix that always reminded you of home. It was a quiet day, one of those rare moments where the two of you could sit together without any cameras, fans, or schedules looming overhead. You were both curled up on the couch, her head resting on your shoulder, her fingers tracing absentminded circles on the back of your hand.

"Y/N," she said softly, her voice breaking the comfortable silence.

You hummed in response, not thinking much of it at first. You were used to these moments, the softness between you two—the kind where she'd murmur your name just to see you smile or catch your attention. But this time, there was a weight to her voice, a tension that settled in the air around you like a subtle warning.

"I've been thinking..." Roseanne lifted her head and turned her body slightly to face you. Her brown eyes, usually so warm and filled with laughter, were serious now. "I think I'm ready for us to settle down."

Your heart skipped a beat. The words settled in your chest like stones sinking to the bottom of a lake. You blinked, caught off guard.

Settle down. The words hung in the air between you like something tangible, something heavy.

"Settle down?" you repeated, your voice almost a whisper.

You could feel your heartbeat in your throat, a sudden rush of nerves that you hadn't anticipated.

Roseanne nodded, her hand slipping from yours as she sat up straighter. "Yeah, I mean... I think it's time. We've been together for eight years, baby. Eight amazing years. And I just..." She hesitated, her eyes searching yours for some sort of agreement or understanding. "I want us to build something more permanent, you know?"

You swallowed hard, feeling a wave of anxiety rising in your chest. She had been thinking about this and planning for it. You, on the other hand, hadn't even imagined what settling down with her would look like. The thought hadn't crossed your mind in the same way, not yet. Not with everything else going on.

"I don't know if I'm ready for that," you admitted, your voice strained with the conflict stirring inside of you.

Roseanne's face fell, her soft features tightening with disappointment. "What do you mean? I thought—" She shook her head as if trying to reorganize her thoughts. "We've been together for so long. I thought we were on the same page about this."

You bit your lip, looking away for a moment to gather your thoughts. This wasn't how you had imagined this conversation happening, not that you had ever prepared for it in the first place. You loved her—God, you loved her more than anything—but the idea of settling down, of making such a monumental decision, scared you.

"Babe, it's not that I don't love you," you began, reaching out to take her hand again. "It's just... I'm not sure I'm ready for that kind of commitment right now."

Her hand felt limp in yours, as if the energy she had poured into this moment was draining away. "But why? We're happy, aren't we?"

You nodded quickly, not wanting her to doubt that. "Of course we are. I'm so happy with you. But marriage or settling down... it's such a big step. It's forever. And I don't know if I'm ready for that kind of responsibility."

Roseanne's brows furrowed, confusion and hurt written across her face. "But we've already been together for so long. Isn't that already a kind of commitment?"

You sighed, running a hand through your hair. She wasn't wrong. Eight years was a long time. But there was something about the finality of it all, the permanence, that made you hesitate.
