"I think we need to go buy some food." Alex says as we enter the house. She looks around the kitchen then stares at me, shrugging. "Well?"
"Okay. Let's go." I say, grabbing my purse. She follows behind me as we leave the house. We head to a departmental store where we randomly buy a bunch of shit with money to blow.
"I kinda want pasta." She says, tapping her finger on her chin. "Yeah, sure why not? Pasta sauce? Or cheese?"
"Definitely cheese. I can have a cheat day." She smirks, grabbing a packet of cheese. "Drinks?" She asks, staring at a row of juice lined up. "Sure. Pick your choice. I think I'll go with pomegranate juice." I grab the juice box and place it on the cart.
All of a sudden, a wave of screams echo around us. I grab Alex and slowly walk towards the counter to see what was going on. We hide behind the shelves while trying to be sneaky about it, funnily enough.
"Shit!" Alex says, peeking behind the shelves. "What?" I ask, trying to see what she's seeing. "This store's getting robbed. Look! Two guys!" She hisses, her eyes fixed on the men who are wearing masks and holding guns.
She steps back, allowing me to look at them. I narrow my eyes as I try to look harder at them. "They're American it seems." I say.
"Don't make me say it again!" The one man says, pointing his handgun at the lady at the register. It seems he's leading the other one. The lady quivers and hurriedly digs into the register to get the money out.
"You don't really have a choice. It's your job. Hurry the fuck up!" He yells. The person next to him doesn't say anything but just gives him assistance, looking around him.
"Alex!" I hiss back at her. "What?!" I stare at them harder, my denial growing stronger by the second. It can't be. It can?
I clench my jaw, grabbing hold of her arm and squeezing it a little too hard. "Ow!" She hisses. "Alex..." "What?"
"It's him." I utter, my eyes fixated on the first robber. "What? Who's 'him'?" I turn to her with my brows furrowed. "Jamie." I whisper. Her eyes widen and she grabs my hand tight, trying to peek a look.
"Stop!" I whisper. I hold her still and shake my head at her. "It's true. He's alive. I know it's him. No one says it like that."
"If he's alive...shouldn't he be looking for you?" "I don't know. I thought I knew everything. I really wish he was dead so I could move on properly. Now...I've gotta deal with this shit." I groan, lowering my head down.
"No! Don't. If it's true that he knows you're alive and doesn't care about it, he's doing you a favour." "What favour?" She sighs and shakes her head. "Adam, Dee."
I shut my eyes and nod. "Fuck." She raises her eyebrows as she hears the robbers leaving the store. "What are you gonna do now?" She asks me with a frown on her face. "I need to find out for myself, Alex. I need to know the truth."
She nods, holding my arm tight. "Go. Follow them. I'll carry our food back, don't worry. Dinner will be ready by the time you come back." She smiles softly. I chuckle and nod. "Okay."
I hand her my bag and I leave the store, trying to trace the robbers' steps. I bite my lip, hearing a bunch of voices fade away towards my left.
My instincts kick in and I follow the voices, trying to catch up. I spot the pair hiding behind a building where they take off their masks and hide their guns, stuffing the proof into their bags.
"That seemed easier than I anticipated." The first one says. "Yeah, but give it a few weeks, we're gonna have to run again." The other one says. "Bet."
I crouch behind a bunch of shrubs and squint my eyes, trying to look at their faces. Thankfully, the streetlight did me a favour in confirming my suspicions.
"Let's head back. The cops are gonna be swarming the place in a few minutes." Jamie says patting Calvin's back. "Yeah, boss. Lead the way."
Certainly.
They head towards the road and blend into the crowd. I run after them, trying my best not to be spotted. They start talking but I can't hear them considering the distance between us but I assume they'd be talking about either the next hit or how this one was successful.
I follow them for a while as they cross a big market before, they take a left, away from the crowd. I suck in a sharp breath of air before going after them, being as stealth as possible.
"What's for dinner?" Jamie asks. "I dunno. Let's just make some instant noodles." "You really are a lazy shit, aren't you?" Jamie says grunting.
"Well? Any ideas?" "Let's have something fancy." "Oh yeah? Like what? And how?"
"I dunno. Let's figure it out when we get in. We need to stash this away ASAP." Jamie says, patting on the duffle bag.
They both take a narrow path behind a shop towards the back. "Come on. I can't wait to relax and sit in bed. What a fuckin' hit that was." Jamie comments, disappearing behind the shop. "You bet, boss."
I wait for a while, assuming they both have entered a building. I don't know why I waited. I think I'm just nervous. And angry. And irritated. Actually, I shouldn't even be here. But I am. I need to know the truth. If I even get the truth, that is.
I follow them and turn my gaze to a door behind the shop. So. They live here, huh? They're in for a surprise. As am I.
