"Why aren't you answering the phone, the best detective in the department?"
"Because I just left the court."
"For Mr.Randall's murder case or not?"
"From what I see, you are well-informed."
"Well yeah..."
"I had to testify to publish the evidence and statements."
"And nobody informed me about this?"
"Look, today it's better not to talk to me." I said. "Everyone knows how I become when I don't have coffee in the morning."
"Now, should I ask you about coffee too, or will you tell me about it like you told me about your court excursion?"
"Why the hell did I get stuck with you, Cameron?"
"What did you say?!" he asked quickly.
"Forget it."
While I was talking on the phone, I got into my car parked in the court yard.
"Long story short, I didn't drink coffee today."
I explained.
"The reason?"
"The reason, a woman." I said.
That prolonged "e" of his annoyed me even more than the fact that I had low caffeine levels.
"Tell me, tell me." he exclaimed on the other end of the phone.
"All of my coffee ended up on her blouse, God."
"WHAAAAAT?!"
I removed the phone from my ear, or else I might have hearing problems in my youth.
"Did you know that when your voice gets loud, it tends to crack, right?"
"I know, Donzo, but I want to say... what?!"
"As I said. What an awkward situation."
"But my question is, why didn't you get another coffee?"
"Because I was running out of time, maybe?"
"Hmm, that makes sense."
"Why did you call me, Cameron?"
"First, I was worried about you, and second, it's good to bring your handsome ass to the police department."
"What happened?"
"Johny, the old man, got worried when I told him you weren't answering the phone."
"I apologize for that, but I'll return immediately."
"And have a coffee...but you know what, I'll have one for you because you're still within time limits. Kisses."
I hung up with a smile that crept onto my face, but I really needed that coffee. I couldn't stop somewhere to get one, or else the department would catch fire from the boss's nerves. I really didn't have a problem with long nights working, but I couldn't tolerate the absence of caffeine in my veins. John, the old man, was always serious about work. I didn't stop to get the coffee. Meanwhile, I thought about the girl who was drenched in coffee, and the most beautiful thing was that she didn't react like some girls who don't let a single word pass without saying something.
"Well, she was different, I suppose."
I parked the car and hurried with quick steps to enter the department.
"Hello, Mr. Mayfire." said a colleague walking in the corridor.
"Hello."
I greeted the officers who were circulating around the department, and quickly met with Cameron.
"You came?"
"As you can see me..."
"Here's the coffee."
Cameron handed me one of those plastic cups. I thanked him and gave him a smile. The irony of my life was that the love I had been expecting from my family for a long time, I found it today among my colleagues, and that hurt me to some extent, but it also made me stronger.
"Come on, Donzo, let's move because it seems like my eyes are getting black from Cambell's office."
Donzo was the nickname Cameron calls me, and old Johny was again a nickname he gave to the head of the homicide division, John Cambell.
"Come in!"
An irritated voice was heard from inside the office. I entered, followed by Cameron.
"So you finally decided to show up?"
"I apologize, boss, but I was..."
"That's enough."
I raised my eyebrows in a quick movement and pursed my lips. After all, any excuse i could find was pointless.
"Why don't we get to the point, boss?" Cameron interjected.
"For once, you said something I liked, Sinclair."
It made me suppress a laugh under my breath. I just couldn't stop thinking about Cameron and Mr.Cambell, agreeing with each other.
"Is there something funny, Mr.Mayfire?"
"No, absolutely not...I just have a sore throat and I need to gargle from time to time, to feel better."
"Then leave the coffee, my dear, and have some tea."
I glanced at my coffee, which had turned ice-cold. It was the second cup for today, that was wasted.
"I'll keep that in mind."
"Now let's set aside the jokes and medical advices." said the boss. "Mr.Mayfire I couldn't burden anyone else with this case of thr gruesomely murdered student."
"I've heard about it but I don't know the details of the case."
"I assigned the case to Sinclair due to the engagements you've had, and now I want you two to work together, as colleagues."
"You'll inform me later, Cameron."
Cameron nodded in agreement.
"The case is yours, Mayfire, along with this annoying parasite here."
"Did he have it with me?" Cameron asked, looking at me with surprise.
"It's alright, boss, we won't disappoint you."
"Speak for yourself," Cameron said in a low voice.
"Shut it Sinclair, come now." I said, grabbing him by the arm.
I pulled Cameron towards the door, and the two of us left the office.
"We won't let you down, boss." he mocked me.
"What else did you expect me to say?"
Cameron raised his eyebrows in a sign of ignorance.
"No matter how foolish you are, I couldn't find a better colleague."
"I might cry now." he said, acting touched.
"Come on, let the tears and nonsense go." I said. "By the way, tomorrow is Saturday, and we have a day off."
"How lucky."
"Before you leave, I want you to go to Ruby in the archives and ask for the file of the case in question, and once you have it, I want it ready for me tomorrow."
"Yes, sir."
"We have a colossal task ahead of us now."
