Vuyo
“Mama, I wish you were here, I am back and safe. I hope you are still resting. I love you.” I switch on The lights and close the blinds. I need to get the furniture back from the storage unit. My mother and I used to live in here when I was in highschool. I moved out when I got a bursary to study in Cape Town, she remained. I wish she told me she was sick and I would have stayed. *Sigh*
I lock up and drive to the B&B I booked into, I text Matshepo informing her that I am home and safe. I do a young exercise then take a shower. I eat my leftovers and check my socials.
I wake up the following morning and go for a run then get back and take a shower before heading for breakfast. I see missed calls from Vusi and Junior when I get back from eating, my phone was left charging. I call back Jr.
“Vuyo man, how are you?”
“Jr , I’m good, what’s up?” I greet.
“Mama is asking what time you are coming, secondly we are having drinks at my place, please bring something warm for later.” Jr.
“Dude, I’m tired.”
“That won’t work on me, besides your sister in law is the one hosting us.” Jr pressures me, I agree to join them, his wife and I went to school together, she has a soft spot in my heart. We end the call.
I spend my morning replying to emails, at 10am I go out to the mall and buy a cooler bag, ice, cold drinks, water, a few snacks and a 24 pack of my green cans.
“Sir, do you have your rewards card? These are on special if you have your card.” The teller informs, scanning the items.
“Excuse me.” The lady behind me calls with her phone stretched out. I frown looking at her.
“Reward card.”She smiles, I give the phone to the teller who says I must fetch more chips and chocolate slabs, after she scans the phone. I give the lady her phone, and peek in her basket. She has the snacks and other items in her basket.
“Please borrow me your basket, I’m in a hurry to fetch the things.” She hesitantly passes the basket and she stands in front of the till packing her things in a bag and mine in the trolley.
“I will carry that, thanks.” I take the heavy drinks, and her wines, I pay for everything, I give her the slip and push the trolley to the door.
“Thank you, please give me. Your numbers.” She says giving me her phone. I type and dial my numbers on her phone then I give it back.
“My ride is here.” She says, that’s when I notice a white Toyota that parks next to us. I open the door for her and she gets in the back seat, they drive off. I turn to my car and load the boot.
I didn’t ask her for her name, I remember immediately when I see the missed call. I save it as “Chardonnay”, I drive to Hammanskraal jamming to a mixture of 90’s Rnb.
“Junior, I’m on my way.” I answer my phone that stopped my music.
“I need you to fetch salads at home please. Mama is ready.”
“Shap.” I make a detour and arrive at my grandma’s house. She is sitting under the tree, I give her a hug and greet her.
“Are you not joining the other kids?” she asks looking at my bag.
“I am, I will be sleeping here.”
“That will be very nice, I missed you.”Mawe.
“I know, is Matshepo in?”
“In the kitchen.” Mawe walks me into the house, I put my protein powders in the kitchen and pour some in my bottle. Matshepo and I load the dishes in the car.
“O.Letswene sent you R350. Pin 11112” I frown reading text. Mawe calls me to give me food. I take the food and drive to Juniors house. He tells me to park in the garage to keep the car safe.
“Mrs Mathebula, how are you?” I greet Jr’s wife, she hits me with her dish cloth and laughs.
“Little brother.” Nombuso, popularly known as Bubu, gives me a hug.
“Mrs, you and I are the same age.”. I tease.
“Mr, traditionally I am older. How have you been? Any Mrs on the way?”Bubu.
“I’m good thanks, nope nothing , I’m still the single Vuyo you know.”
My phone disturbs our conversation, I excuse myself and go answer in the garage, since it’s less noisy. “Vuyo hello.” I greet the caller.
“Ugh, hi. It’s Ore here, I am checking whether you received the money I sent you?”
