Vuyo
I watch Ore and Mawe laugh under the tree, I feel better seeing her laugh, Jr calls me, I accept his call and walk to the bedroom. “How is she? I heard you speak about her mother.” Jr.
“Yho, JuJu I am so heartbroken on her behalf, she’s outside with Mawe, she looks happier, we will chat before bed.” I recall her laughter.
“I hope she heals man she’s a good person.”
“She is, remember how we laughed about that love at first sight song, I understand him now.” I confess.
“I knew it, that night when you out after 10pm. I knew you were in love.” Jr laughs.
“Come on, I deserve some loving. Let me call you back, Tiger has something for me.”
“Send me some cash.”Jr. I laugh and read the email on the Langa family. I asked Tiger to get me more information and he did well, I have accounts that they use to launder money, their tender bids. I guess their accountant gets paid a lot to hide this mess.
“Abuti, please make sure Lewatle is safe, I am about to start a wild fire.” I text Oratile. I then work on an account and fix the coding glitch.
“Vuyo, come and eat.” Matshepo calls.
Ore gives Mawe a tray with her food and a dishwashing cloth for her hands. She does the same with me then she and Matshepo bring their food and sit down with us.
“Vuyo, Sesi says her brother ordered mats. Why didn’t you tell me?” Mawe.
“He did but he didn’t specify the number yet, he needs them in June though, he wants to ask his girlfriend to marry him.” I explain, Ore looks at me.
“That is beautiful, I will make good ones for his wedding.” Mawe .
“Since when are you and deputy dad best friend’s ?” Ore.
“It’s amazing what 6 hours in the waiting area can do.”
“Vuyo wash the dishes, Ore come with me.” Mawe. I take the dishes and find the kitchen clean, only our plates need washing. This reminds me of my mother, she would cook and wash all the pots, dinner dishes would only be our plates.
“Am I the only one who sees Thapi in Ore?” Matshepo startles me.
“No, I was thinking the same thing.” Matshepo takes her water and greets me.
“Fields need to be cleared. Wawa is good. I trust you won’t walk near the field.” Oratile replies.
“Let the games begin.” I replay.
“Vuyo, please bring me water.” Mawe. I take her a glass of water, she’s alone in the bedroom.
“I gave her some of your mother’s clothes.” Mawe
“Does she wants them?” I genuinely ask.
“Yes, she said they are timeless swak.” Mawe say and I crack up.
“Swag, Mawe.”
“You know what I mean.” Mawe.
“Mah, I think you must keep these for Vuyo’s w..” Ore trails off realising I’m in the room. She is holding my mother’s jewellery box and some clothes in her arm.
“For Vuyo’s what Sesi?” Mawe. Ore clears her throat and she places the items on the bed.
“Mah, these are too precious to give to me, the material on the jackets. Eish mah, I would want to give them to my child and not just anyone.” Ore.
“You don’t like them?” Mawe.
“I do a lot, I don’t think I deserve them though. What happens when Vuyo gets married? What of his wife?” She looks down.
“Sesi, you deserve these, you are my child and have made Vuyo happy, if it ends it ends, I know Mathapelo would have loved to share her clothes with you. You my girl have shown all of us so much love in a short time we have known you, you deserve these.” Mawe
Ore bursts into tears, she is inconsolable. Mawe pulls her to her bed and holds her tightly and she lets her cry. I don’t know what to do, I fetch water for her. She is crying silently now, my heart hurts.
