Chapter 5 : Shit
"WHAT HAVE I DONE!!!!!!!!!!!"
In a moment of overwhelming realization, you couldn't help but exclaim.
Your voice echoed through the space as you forcefully set your drink down on the bar table, the sound punctuating your distress.
Tears began to stream down your face, cartoonishly large and expressive, as you gave in to sobs that shook your frame.
You found yourself thumping your forehead against the countertop repeatedly, a physical manifestation of your inner turmoil over the decisions you'd made.
Makino, ever the observer of human drama, watched your display with a mixture of concern and amusement.
She leaned forward across the bar, resting a hand on its surface as she watched you unravel.
"Wow~ Deja vu!" she remarked, her tone light and teasing, finding a strange familiarity in your distress.
You turned to her, desperation and confusion evident in your eyes.
"I don't know the guy, Makino! What if he's a creep? OR WORSE! WHAT IF HE'S THOSE RICH MAN THAT HAS A HOBBY OF MURDERING PEOPLE?!"
The panic in your voice crescendoed with each hypothetical, fueled by the myriad of dark scenarios your imagination conjured.
Makino's response was a gentle chide, her smile warm and understanding.
"You have to stop watching those unrealistic television dramas, Y/N-chan," she advised, her amusement not diminishing the empathy she felt for your situation.
However, you remained unconvinced, your anxiety not so easily assuaged.
"A man just dumps a bunch of money on me for a job, and I'm not supposed to be paranoid?!" you retorted, your grip tightening around your whisky cup, the weight of the situation pressing down on you.
Makino's voice broke through your turbulent thoughts with a mix of sternness and amusement, "Oh, stop being so dramatic... There has to be a reason why you accepted the offer," she said, pouring another drink for you as a gesture to calm your nerves.
You exhaled a heavy sigh, allowing the aroma of the freshly poured drink to momentarily distract you.
"Well... the employee benefits were very tempting... and he said he'd let Luffy move in too..." you admitted, the words tasting of both rationale and reluctance.
Makino's gaze on you sharpened, her arms folding as she assessed your explanation with a knowing look.
"There has to be something else besides that. You usually decline anything that makes you hesitate," she pointed out, her familiarity with your cautious nature shining through.
Her observation nudged you towards a deeper introspection.
You found yourself revisiting the moment Mihawk's gaze had ensnared yours, how your heart had quickened its pace as he recited lines from 'The Charge of The Light Brigade'.
Beyond the allure of the benefits and the accommodation for Luffy, it was his challenge that truly resonated with you.
It had been a long time since anyone had dared to challenge you in such a manner, to ignite a spark within you that refused to be extinguished.
The fire that kindled in your heart in response to his provocation was unexpectedly invigorating, tempting you to step outside your comfort zone.
Yet, despite this revelation, you were determined to keep this particular motivation a secret from Makino.
