Chapter 19 : Regret
Mihawk sat on the veranda, the warm evening air settling comfortably around him as he swirled the dark red wine in his glass.
He took a measured sip, his golden eyes staring out over the picturesque landscape, the familiar quietness of his parents' home offering him a rare moment of respite.
It had been a long time since he had come here—a deliberate choice, really.
The villa was both a sanctuary and a reminder of the family dynamics that often pushed him away—complicated relationships and emotions that he sometimes found more difficult to navigate than any battle.
But today, he found himself there, seated at the wrought iron table, sharing an unexpected moment with his mother and father.
Across the table, Shakky sat with an air of effortless elegance, her posture relaxed as she leaned back in her chair, her wine glass held loosely in one hand.
Her presence was commanding, always composed, as if she could handle anything with just the quirk of an eyebrow.
She gave Mihawk a knowing smile, her eyes glinting with mischief that only a mother could muster.
Rayleigh, Mihawk's father, was lounging a few feet away, an amused grin playing on his face.
His glasses were perched low on his nose, his gaze flickering between his wife and his son, taking in the scene with a mix of bemusement and affection.
"Well, Hawk-chan," Shakky began, her voice lilting, teasing, as she raised her glass towards him, the faintest gleam in her eyes.
"Wouldn't you like to have a family reunion?"
She sipped her wine slowly, her lips curving into a smile that suggested she already knew exactly what his answer would be.
Mihawk glanced at her sideways, his eyes narrowing slightly in response.
He could feel the familiar exasperation bubbling within him, and he set his glass down with a subtle clink against the wrought iron table.
He let out a long, almost imperceptible sigh, his gaze shifting back towards the rolling hills in the distance.
"A reunion..." he muttered, his voice dry, laced with resignation.
"That is, if I had been given any choice in the matter."
Shakky chuckled, a soft, melodic sound that carried across the quiet veranda.
Mihawk could feel the amusement radiating off of her, and he knew she was enjoying this—seeing him thrown off balance, caught unprepared by his sister's unexpected return.
"Well, it was about time you knew," she said, setting her glass down gently.
"Boa is... persistent. I thought it better to give you a heads-up rather than have her show up unannounced."
Mihawk sighed again, this one deeper, tinged with the weight of all the memories and experiences he shared with his younger sister.
Boa was a force of nature, a whirlwind of emotions, someone who seemed to thrive on chaos and drama.
He looked over at his mother, the faintest hint of gratitude in his gaze, his voice lowering as he spoke.
"Thank you, Mother," he said, his tone softer, almost grudging.
"It gave me enough time to... avoid her."
Rayleigh, who had been quietly observing, finally spoke up, his grin widening as he watched his son. He raised an eyebrow, his voice carrying a hint of laughter.
