Ever Since Then

When I arrived at the art club, Kita was already there.

"You're late!"

"I am? Classes just ended. Do you run all the way over here?"

"Maybe!" She says with a cheeky smile.

"Say, where's Mitsuya?"

"He's not coming today. He wants to get some basketball practice in today. The season starts in a week!"

"I see."

Things are going to be different without him here as much. Especially when it comes to preparing for the festival.

"Where's Suzuki-chan?"

"She has cleaning duty today."

"Oh okay. So, it's just us today then! We're doing the portrait today?" She asks with a bright smile.

"Oh yeah, that's right. Sure! We can do that."

"Yay! Okay!"

I grab out a canvas, some pencils, and markers.

"So how do you wanna do this? A little pose or-"

"Whatever you want!"

"Uhhhh okay. Uhh, how about one where you're sitting."

"Okay!"

She sits down on a chair with her back straight and her hands together.

"That'll be good. Now try to be still."

"Rodger!"

For the next hour, I sketched out Kita. I made sure to be as detailed as possible. I loved drawing her hair and eyes the most. Her eyes are so pretty. I also got a good sense of how she looked. I've never looked at her this long before.

She's cute.

But I mean of course she's cute. I've always thought she was pretty when I first met her. But now it feels like she looks a lot more bright and colorful than before. Maybe it's because the longer I'm with her the more of her extroverted aura leaks onto me, making me sound more alive. Maybe that's what Suzuki meant about me spreading my wings. And I've been a lot more happy with Kita in my life. Maybe that's just how extroverted people make me feel.

But is it really just that?

"How's the drawing going?"

"Oh, it's going pretty good. I just need to start coloring now. Say uh... you have nice eyes."

"O-Oh... well thank you!"

"Sorry, it's just when I'm drawing they stand out."

Kita smiles sweetly.

"I see. I'm glad you like them."

I spend the next half hour coloring the portrait. Throughout the whole time, Kita sat ever so still.

"Do you not get tired of sitting in that exact pose? You're as stiff as a statue."

Kita chuckles.

"Hehe! I don't mind sitting. It's nice and quiet too. You're like a different person when you're drawing. Your look, your movement, it all changes."

"Yeah. It's one of those things that gets me in a flow state. It's nice."

Kita smiles brightly.

"We should do this more. It's fun."

"Yeah, maybe we should."

I grab the canvas and show her the complete portrait.

"Woah! It's so detailed! And here I thought the Christmas sketch was good! But this is on another level!"
