Chapter 2

Kailani's first impression of the arena fights was the brutality. Sure, she gets that they were chained and forced to fight to the death, but couldn't they do it with less gore? It might traumatize just a few of the dragonet prisoners here.

Just a few of them.

The mudwing that Kailani had looked for after meeting Peril had long since stopped watching, and the nightwing as well, after what Kailani assumed was geeking out at the Icewing and Sandwing. The seawing the two kept glancing at, was staring at the fight attentively.

The seawing looked away before the swipes that were sure to be gorey hit but looked back a few seconds.

Kailani watched a few seconds at a time before studying every dragon she could see from the arena. Kailani went back to studying the arena fights, trying to learn new moves to survive her first fight.

The sandwing swiped at the icewing, leaving blue blood dripping over his already bleeding snout.

Kailani sighed. She'd already seen a lot of moves and had started to be able to predict them: 'Icewings gonna hit the sandwing with his tail.'

Sure enough, the Icewing retaliated by swinging his tail forward; of course, it wasn't always correct, which was proved by the sandwing stabbing the Icewing in the head with his tail. Kailani looked away at the last moment, narrowly missing the hit.

Kailani didn't need any more gore in her head. Scarlet had traumatized her enough over the past few days.

Speaking of it, it was really odd that Scarlet hadn't called her up for the past few days. Scarlet has a brand new hybrid she's never seen fight, and two traitor dragons. Kailani was almost scared to know what she had planned.

There've already been two fights today, so there won't be many more, if any. Kailani watched as two Skywings flew up to her, one looking nervous before his partner elbowed him and hissed something. The red Skywing straightened himself, and the two flew to her as if nothing had ever happened.

'Hey, wait, isn't that one of the ones who had chased me and Ma originally?'

They reached Kailnai and loosened the chains so they could move her easier. Kailani forced herself to swallow her anger at the skywings and let them lead her to the palace.

As they flew Kailani to the castle, the red skywing tried to make small talk, very awkwardly.

"So what do you like to do?" The red skywing bearly stammered out.

"Fly." Kailani replied curtly, wanting this conversation over already.

"I like to fl-"

"Shut up, you blumbering pigeon." His partner cut in, probably to keep him from making a fool of himself, though she was too late.

Kailani, surprisingly, still found the conversation amusing nonetheless.

Arriving at the palace corridor, the awkward red skywing's partner dropped Kailani at the entrance to the corridor quite a bit from the floor. Neither Kailani nor the red skywing expected it; they both had a rough landing while she landed gracefully.

"Aella! Come on!" The red dragon turned to Kalani, offering his talons. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," Kailani answered while taking his talons. The red dragon hoisted Kailani up, having to flap his large wings for extra vantage to pull her up before returning the talons for walking.

"Anil, you do realize that is a prisoner, correct?"

"That doesn't mean we can't be nice!"

Aella scoffed before turning and heading down the corridor, swishing her tail angrily.

"What's up with her?" Kailani asked after Aella had walked far enough that she was out of earshot.

"I'm not sure exactly, but from what I've pieced together, one of her family members was killed by one of the prisoners, she's always sort of been like this." Anil explained it quickly.

"Oh," Kailani replied.

'To think a few minutes ago, I was keeping myself from killing them. Now I'm chilling with one and sympathizing with the other.' Kailani swallowed her smile.

The rest of the short walk continued in silence, with Kailani admiring the jeweled decor on the wall.

Arriving at the queen's throne room, Kailani saw a seawing exiting the room, the nightwing and mudwing, and Aella waiting by the decorated door.

Kailani walked through the door, both skywings guarding her. They flew to the door with a nod of Scarlet's head.

Anil wisely did not show whether he was worried or not.

Kailani waited a few moments -tail lashing the entire time- before the door opened again, revealing her parents. Kailani's eyes widened in horror at the muzzle over her mother's mouth, but she ran over to them nonetheless, barely reaching the two before Scarlett interrupted the family reunion.

"Now that you are all here, I'd like to get to business." Scarlett started from her throne, which was decorated with jewels.

Kaliani barely refrained from charging at Scarlet, just then noticing a red skywing reading a scroll; Kailani ignored the dragon in favor of lashing her tail again. Cove, Kailani's father, wound his tail tightly around Kailani's both to give comfort and keep her from doing something irrational. Charging at Scarlet would be a great example.

Kailani was unable to lash her tail because of her father's tight grip, so she gave up unusually quickly for her personality. Kailani wanted to keep this sparing moment with her parents as long as possible.

"I'll be putting Kailani into the arena, and I'll be gracious enough to let you both watch." Scarlet ended with a pleased look on her face.

The reactions from Cove and Auburn were immediate. Cove shouted, "No, you can't!" While Auburn shot up immediately, fire shot through the muzzle. While the two had expected as much, they'd been hoping for some other outcome.

Kailani's reaction wasn't as outward or serious; her first thought was, 'No wonder she's Burn's ally.' The only other reaction was tightening her tail around her fathers.

"I can't?" Scarlet didn't really ask. "And why not? I'm the queen, and this is my kingdom, and those two are my subjects and traitors, and I'm sure Queen Coral won't mind what I have done to you."

"Technically," Kailani started, fear dampening her anger and ignoring the almost painful fighting of her tail, "I'm as much your subject as Queen Coral, and as far as I'm aware, there is no law saying what to do with hybrids."

Scarlet was not pleased by Kailani's intrusion, which made Kailani extremely happy, though the glimmer of interest in Scarlet's eyes, Kailani knew instinctively wasn't good.

"I'm the Queen; I make the laws of this land. You're all dismissed." Scarlett waved her hand and a wave that could very easily be read as aquatics 'leave'.

Auburn and Coves guards came up to them, Anil and Aella following Cove's tail as he reared up to claw up one orange guard.

Kailani looked on in surprise. She supposed she could understand the effort; however, it didn't seem to make much sense to her. They were in the literal middle of the sky palace. No one could fight an entire army by themselves; forget Castle; Scarlet's castle no less. Except maybe an animus.

Anil and Aella flew up to Kailani and grabbed her from above. Kailani tensed at the unexpected touch. Anil and Aella managed to drag her away with a bit of difficulty, though Kailani was soon tied in place yet again.

Anil shot her a look of sympathy and pity, while Aella warm colored eyes reflected a hint of understanding. Before they flapped off and they glided back to their posts.

Kailani closed her eyes, focusing on the sound of water playing in her head and sighing in resignation. Playing back the now bittersweet memories to pass the time.
