Chapter 3

"Oh, hello, Florence!" Nina gave Flo an odd one-armed hug, carefully avoiding Silver Blade, who was leaving lava in his hoofprints.

"Florence's dad is a saddler," Nina told the ones closer to her. The others were either dragging their unicorns to go look at different things or their unicorns were dragging them.

"Shekoni Saddles—best in business. Count my lucky lightning bolts every day that he chose me and Lightning's Mistake for one of his saddles."

Flo managed to look embarrassed and proud during the short speech. Nina walked away, motioning for the new riders to follow painstakingly. Garrett shoved his feet into the ground and tried to drag Cerulean Tempest towards the group. She stayed rooted to her spot, defiantly.

Noah looked at him, and Garrett motioned for him to go.

Garrett followed the unicorn's line of sight to nothing—absolutely nothing at all. He sighed at his unicorn, confused. Leaning back, the boy tried using his body weight to pull Cerulean away from where she stayed.

Cerulean followed a bit reluctantly, trotting along as her rider sprinted to the rest of the group.

Garrett waved as he passed a very stressed-looking Mitchell, regretting it very quickly as the boy glared harshly at him. Garrett put down his hand and focused on sprinting.

By the time the two had caught up with Nina and the group, she was talking about healer treehouses, which was confusing at first, the two having come in the middle of the explanation.

Noah filled in the gaps of information for Garrett.

There were two healing treehouses. One for riders and the other for unicorns.

Garrett watched Nina point out the mail trees, one giant trunked for each year.

Garrett felt something poke his arm, and Noah offered him the basket that Nina was holding. Garrett turned to his friend, mouth agape in surprise, "There were sandwiches!"

Noah scratched his check regretfully, "Most of us had two already."

Garrett looked at the lone sandwich, taking it, and handing the basket back to his friend with a huff.

Opening the sandwich bag, Garrett only then noticed how hungry he actually was.

"Um, excuse me! My brother didn't get his second sandwich!" A black-haired girl with a pink and red unicorn stuck in; her supposed brother hid behind her as Garrett's attention focused on him.

"Oh, sorry about that," Garrett made no indication that he was. "I didn't get my first."

The girl froze. "I'm so sorry! I didn't know!"

'I noticed,' Garrett smiled, keeping his thoughts to himself. "It's fine. I'm Garrett."

"Ausha, this is Ashish," Ausha nudged her unicorn forward. "This is Molten Ash and Celestial Sphere." A dark orange unicorn dragged Ashish forward. The unicorn sniffed at Cerulean Tempest, who jerked away, snorting and walking away from the curious unicorn.
