Garrett smiled before the lack of sleep from the night caught up to him. Garrett leaned back on the wall as Cerulean screeched at him. Garrett looked at her, confused. Cerulean screeched at him again, trying to bite his hair.
"You're hungry, aren't you?"
Garrett reached into his bag looking for a snack; sadly, the only thing he thought to bring was an apple. "Her-" Cerulean had snatched it out of his hand before he could finish his sentence.
Garrett could feel sleep clinging to him, so as Cerulean struggled to eat the apple whole, Garrett slipped the lead around her neck. Cerulean's head snapped up as she felt something wrap around her neck as she tossed the apple up, accidentally getting it stuck on her horn.
"How'd you even manage to do that?" Garrett asked her breathlessly. Garrett heard the screeching of many baby unicorns. Garrett checked the lead on Cerulean Tempest's neck as he grabbed the end of the lead. Garrett yanked, with a bit of difficulty, the apple off the unicorn's horn, feeding it to her, careful not to get his hand in the way.
As the screeching of the unicorns died away and Cerulean chewed on the core of the apple, Garrett had tried to throw it away; she'd just yanked it out of his hand, and now she was chewing even the stick. Garrett adjusted his bag so it was on better, and he opened the cell door, wrapping Cerulean's lead around his wrist like he'd often done with his dog's leash.
Garrett stepped out of the cell, bumping straight into someone. Garrett's head pounded from both hitting his head against someone else's head and two unicorns screeching at each other.
"Ow! Ah, sorry," Garrett apologized as he wrestled Cerulean back from the black unicorn. "It's fine." The boy said that before he was grabbed by his friend and brought forward a few paces, Garrett looked at the other two who were walking.
"I think we should be heading over there." The curly-haired girl offered, and Garrett nodded politely, focusing on eavesdropping on the other two's conversation.
Cerulean screeched, and lightning hit the side of the cavern. Garrett looked at the Sentinels guarding the exit of the hatchery. He could hear some of the bare basics of what the olive-skinned girl had said: "Skandar, he was on blitzen." The girl continued talking, but anything else she said, Garrett couldn't focus on as the curly haired girl started to talk to him.
"What's your name?" Garrett noted how she tried to keep her distance from all of the unicorns, even her own silver unicorn.
"I'm Garrett." Garrett's voice cracked as he became the unfortunate victim of a shot of lightning. Garrett yelled in pain. Cerulean looked back curiously as she heard her rider. She screeched at him before setting a tree on fire.
Garrett suddenly had a revelation: 'Baby unicorns are the definition of chaos.'
"I'm so sorry!" Flo apologized quickly: "I didn't know Silver Blade was going to do that."
Garrett refrained from looking at Flo curiously. Instead, he placed a reassuring smile on his face. "It's fine!" He told her, "Besides, you said it yourself; you didn't know it was going to happen." Flo smiled back at him, and Garrett was happy he was able to cheer her up.
"Hey, What's your name?" The boy farthest away from him looked over, seemingly surprised that he was being talked to.
"Mitchell Henderson." The boy said it off-handedly, and Garrett got the feeling that he didn't want to be talked to, so he abandoned any thought of conversation and looked over to Flo, opening his mouth to ask a question.
Garrett smelled a scent that smelled like an awful mix between blood and a decomposing corpse. Garrett froze as a wild unicorn walked onto the path. In the corner of his eyes, he could see the other unicorns frozen. He could hear their terrified screeches.
