Chapter 3
"I was just wandering and found the gate, so I tried to find the people. I'm not a spy." The girl held her breath as she waited for what happened next. She had a feeling she shouldn't reveal her cards too soon.
"You'll meet me at the Uchiha gate at dusk tonight. Go." The voice spoke from behind her. The cloaked figure darted out of the shadowed alleyway, slowing her run and walking like she belonged there.
Elora shivered as she passed Fukagu, who glanced at her curiously and not kindly. She heard the voice that had threatened her talk to the likely Uchiha head. The girl pushed some chakra into her ears to hear better, doing her best to keep the amount inconspicuous but enough to listen.
"-they were a spy but we'll see."
"Are you sure you can handle it?"
"Of course. I didn't train under Orochimaru for no reason."
"You have some weird ideas."
'Do not panic. Do not panic. He could be talking about anything; it doesn't necessarily have to be canon. Even if he isn't talking about canon, he's strong, and Naruto strong and wings of fire strong are two very different things. I'm dead.' It took the girl everything in her to not run out of the Uchiha gate once it finally came in front of her. 'Should'a known I'd seen that lollipop symbol somewhere!'
Once out of the gate, the girl ran to the nearest forest and curled at the bottom of a tree trunk. She swore and grabbed her head. "This is bad; this is really bad. Three moons, how am I gonna get out of this?" Switching to grab the hood of her cloak, the girl paced as she spoke in what she had dubbed 'dragon tongue'.
"Are you alright?" Tide asked. Elora froze quickly, making sure her sleeves were still up. They successfully covered the seawing patterns on her arms.
"Yes." Elora refrained from swelling up with pride at realizing she still knew Japanese. Definitely better than before. She'd had to pause her travels on multiple occasions to make sure she knew enough to get through a conversation. Though she had no idea how she knew 'spy'.
"Are you sure?" Tide mimicked her hands, which she quickly put down. "Want to talk about it?" She shrugged. The girl was pretty sure that if she started talking, she would not be able to shut up. "Are you sure?" Tide repeated himself, more insistent this time.
Elora shrugged once more, only to get her legs swiped out from under her. Tide held her shoulders from where she fell unceremoniously to the ground. Tida grinned at her. "I'm not letting you go until you tell me!" Elora disantly thought he sounded much too excited about that. Behind him, a shadow moved, forming a cloaked shape that blended in again a moment later.
Elora glanced at it quickly before looking straight at the expecting face before her. She shrugged. "Was that your kid?" Tide nodded, annoyed, but answered anyway.
"Yes."
"You mentioned you had a daughter?"
Now Tide gazed at the girl, confused. Was she truly someone else? Tide sighed, finally letting go of the girl's shoulder and sitting next to her. He stared at the grass beneath him. "I assume you're going to ask what happened?" At Elora's nod, he continued. "When she was three, she—Elora—was taken by a nightwing, a kind of dragon. I haven't seen her sense."
The silence that followed was long and sad, because what do you say to that? Deciding that if she waited any longer, she'd start crying or something, she broke the silence. "Three's very young."
Tide laughed, but it was a miserable one. "I'm aware. I spent two years looking for her, but the dragons hid well. The others had to drag me back." Tide stared at the ground once more. Why couldn't Elora move her arms? Why wasn't she able to take down her hood? She could feel the mobility; she just had to tell it to move. So why weren't they moving?
Elora looked at the darkening sky. She didn't want to leave him alone with his thoughts, but decapitation didn't sound pleasant either. Across from her, the shadows moved again, only this time motioning to take off her hood. 'I know! I know! I'm trying!' She thought to the shadows. She awkwardly patted the man's shoulder, and he smiled at her.
"Hey! Mr. Tide!" Naruto burst into the clearing, and Elora jumped into the tree, scared. "My father wants to talk to you; believe it!" Naruto looked right at her through the leaves of the tree, squinting. "Who are you?"
"It's fine, Naruto. Let's go." With that, the ninjas left the girl alone, hiding in the tree. Her friend motioned for her to go as if shooing a fly. Elora closed her eyes and breathed out shakily.
Time to go deal with a Uchiha.
"Good evening." Minato greeted the seawing shinobi, who nodded politely in response. He motioned to a chair. Minato guessed he was tired, but he needed to give him a mission. "How's Malikai?"
Tide plopped down in the aforementioned chair gratefully. "He's fine with his mother right now." He grinned sheepishly, though it lacked any joy. "I think she's going to be mad at me. I assume you didn't call me just to chat, though." Tide straightened as he asked the fourth hokage.
"Yes. Who's the girl?" Minato waved Naruto out as he noticed him standing by the door. The hokage sighed; he'd always had an interest in being a hokage. Speaking of, that reminded him of his youngest student. Currently away on a short mission, he'd be back soon, and that meant Minato would have to talk to him. Minato's piercing gaze rested on Tide, who looked quite uncomfortable as he started explaining.
"She says her name is Elora; past that, I don't know much. She glazed behind me for a second, so I believe she saw something, but it didn't have chakra, whatever it was."
"Like your father?"
Tide shrugged. "I don't know. She seemed to have a different chakra signature underneath the present one, but I don't think she's a jinchuriki; maybe she uses nature chakra. She's also sharp, and the way she carries herself, she seems to want to blend in. She's definitely not a trained kunoichi, but I think she knows how to use chakra."
"Is she Elora?" Minato grabbed his notebook and started jotting things down.
"I mentioned Elora, and she asked about her; take that as you will." Tide shrugged once more.
Minato rested his chin on his palm. He gazed at his notes. "I see. Stay near her and see if you can find out more. If she is a danger, you'll need to bring her in no matter what, alive, preferably."
Tide nodded gravely. "One more thing: would it be possible for her to enroll in the academy? She's fast enough to be on par with some of those in Naruto's class and with the disappearances..." Tide trailed off.
"If you think she would be fit for the class, go ahead. We need to fill some of the empty seats." Minato closed his eyes. As much as it pained the hokage they did need to fill the seats. Iruka wasn't going to like this.
"HEY! YOU CAN'T PAINT ON THE HOKAGE MOUNTAIN!"
"I take that's Naruto?" Tide guessed with a small, amused smile on his lips.
"I just hope Kushina isn't helping him again." Minato hoped, but he knew that his wife had likely supplied the paint. Minato winced, "or Akane."
As Elora ran to the Uchiha gate, trees and buildings passed in a blur. Skidding to a stop, she admired the way the dirt kicked up and her cloak spun around her. The girl grabbed her hood to keep it from falling. She winced. Another chance has gone out the window.
Elora walked forward to the gate inside. She still couldn't see anyone, but she could hear chatter and laughter. The girl smiled, a flash of red shone in her peripheral vision, and a blade pressed against her throat.
"Now come with me." The same voice threatened once more.
"Do I have a choice?" The girl questioned as a shadow moved. 'No,' she thought, 'not unless necessary'.
