Wof hybrids

Chapter 3

Kailani stared terrified at the wide arena before her; it looked completely different up close, it looked so plain yet could invoke such terror from one look from anyone who knew anything.

Kailani heard her opponent called up, he was an Icewing. That was all Kailani registered before it was her name being called and Anil reminded her she had to go up. Kailani went up, hiding her terror as well as she could. As she walked, Kailani reviewed all she knew of Icewings cowering slightly. 'Frostbreath, thin whip-like tails, claws and teeth, I think that's it.'

Kailani heard the start of her fight and the Icewing muttering offended that they had quote, 'Underestimated him so much as to put him against a dragonet.' End quote. Kailani decidedly was not offended by that.

The Icewing lunged at her before Scarlet had even finished saying start. Kailani flapped her wings as much as the reinforced wire would allow. The Icewing landed on top of her front claw already on her neck. Kailani clawed at the Icewing's underbelly shivering at the cold blood that dripped down.

The only indication that the Icewing was hurt was a small hiss of pain as the Icewing prepared to snap her neck.

Kailani ducked and thrashed under the Icewing, feeling the fruit of her effort as the Icewing lost balance for a single moment.

A single moment was all she needed.

Kailani hit the Icewings hind leg with her tail, slipping out while the Icewing gained his balance. Not allowing the Icewing the needed moment to recover Kailani hopped onto the cold, scaled back grabbing one of the horns reminiscent of an icicle and pulled it to the ground.

Kaitlin hopped off not sure what to do. A cold blast of ice that was so cold it felt hot hit her neck. Kailani felt cold claws rake across her snout, Kailani saw the tail coming towards her and the world flashed white before black clouded her vision.

When Kailani woke up she felt cold talons on her neck and head, she could hear a muffled roar that was quickly silenced and smell blood and dirt from the floor.

Kailani felt the talons start to jerk her head and rolled her entire body to claw the Icewings eyes.

As Kailani jumped back she felt the gravity of the situation settle in her mind, 'I think I just blinded him!' Shock faded as numbness seeped into her bones as one thought filled her head.

'Me or you.'

Kailani knew what the answer would be.

You.

Kailani lunged, digging her talons in the side of the icewings second and third rib. She twisted, shivering as she felt the lungs move. Kailani jumped away, her hands becoming cold.

Kailani hissed as she dodged the frostbreath from the icewing. Already he was having trouble breathing, he took a step forward before he collapsed, unmoving.

As Scarlet announced Kailani as the winner she sneaked a glance up anxious to see her parents' reactions. Unsurprisingly they seemed more relieved than anything.

'Don't scare us like that again' Cove flashed to his daughter, relief shining in his eyes. Kailani almost smiled.

As Kailani limped back in the tunnel she glanced back once something caught her eye before becoming engulfed by shadows and escorted to her pavilion.

As Kailani rested she took inventory of her wounds. Her foreleg had a bit of ice on it as well as the opposite side of her neck. Kailani's snout was bleeding as well.

'Considering I was fighting an Icewing I think I got out pretty much unscathed.'

Kailani reflected on what she'd seen, 'was that a tear?' Kailani scratched the surface of the tower with her claws trying to get the feeling of the icewings' lungs off her talons.

Kailani noticed Peril and half-smiled genuinely happy to see the fiery dragon.
