"Wangji, has anyone arrived yet?" Lan Minghui asked, eager to meet her friends again.
"The disciples of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan are at the entrance. They have no invitation; therefore, they are not to enter," her brother replied.
Lan Biyun, sensing her impatience, quickly added, "Wangji, it's nearly Hai Shi. An invitation was given out to them and Sect Leader Jiang confirmed they were coming, so we might as well bring them in."
Lan Wangji looked away in an I-want-to-say-no-but-I-can't way. Lan Minghui, starting to go insane with impatience, decided to resort to something ridiculous.
"A-Zhan, please???" she begged while sajiao-ing.
Unable to stand her behavior, he just sighed in resignation and faint amusement. "Mn. Alright."
When the three of them arrived at the clearing the disciples of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan had set up camp in, the two girls inhaled a sharp intake of breath at the sight of a tall girl with light brown eyes, dark brown hair with a faint glow of red, and a phoenix hairpin embedded in her hair. It was Li Xingsi, now known as Wei Xingsi. Barely able to restrain her excitement, Lan Minghui closed her eyes for a brief moment, breathing in.
Wait until tomorrow. By then, everything will be like it used to be.
***************
Waking up at the early hour of Mao Shi like always, Lan Minghui took an extra minute to make sure that her gold-embroidered amethyst and blue robes were clean and devoid of any creases, to straighten any tangles in her hair, and to make any other necessary adjustments. Once she considered her bearing satisfactory, she picked up Huari and left to start the day.
Entering the classroom with Lan Biyun and Wei Xingsi, with Nie Yilian following close behind. The four of them sat together at a table closer to the corner of the room, which surprised a handful of people. Lan Minghui felt a tiny jolt of guilt after seeing Lan Wangji's confused and slightly hurt expression, making sure that she would sit closer to him next time.
"Let's meet at the back hill after the ceremony," Wei Xingsi suggested quietly, smiling. "I'm so happy to see you again!"
Lan Minghui was about to answer in agreement, but at that moment, Lan Qiren cleared his throat and called for the attention of all the disciples present. He began reciting the three thousand five hundred rules that all visitors had to stick to. Lan Minghui tuned out his voice and stared off into space, her thoughts drifting about. However, her mind landed on one inquiry in particular: Why exactly had she and her friends been brought to this world after their deaths? Lan Minghui loved her current life; she had what was necessary for life, friends both within and outside of her clan, a family she could rely on, a pretty high status, and a powerful cultivation level, but that didn't stop her from wondering why she was transmigrated to this world.
Why us? Why this world? And how?
When Lan Minghui snapped out of her thoughts, Jin Zixuan and his disciples were already sitting back down, and Nie Huaisang and Meng Yao were standing up. She realized guiltily that she'd missed part of the saluting ceremony and quickly focused her attention.
As Nie Huaisang walked, he stumbled slightly and tripped in the direction of Wei Xingsi. Thankfully, he caught himself just in time, though that didn't stop him from flushing in embarrassment and quietly apologizing to Wei Xingsi, who nodded and quickly turned away from him. Lan Minghui and Lan Biyun smirked in amusement, while Nie Yilian laughed silently behind her sleeve.
As Jiang Cheng made his way up to the front of the room, the classroom doors were flung open by Wen Chao. Strutting in like he owned the place, Wen Chao sneered, "I never knew that the Cloud Recesses were so hard to enter!"
"I was not aware that the Qishan Wen Clan would be coming to the Cloud Recesses. Is Wen-gongzi here to attend the lectures?" Lan Xichen asked.
"The Qishan Wen Clan has always been educating others; we have no need for this useless lecture of yours."
Several people were not so pleased by Wen Chao's statement. The disciples of the Gusu Lan Clan frowned, while the visitors started speaking to their deskmates in soft undertones. Lan Wangji angrily took a step towards Wen Chao, but stopped as Lan Xichen, Lan Biyun, and Lan Minghui shot him a warning glance.
Wei Wuxian spoke up. "Then, in that case, why did Wen-gongzi come?"
"Who is this hangdog?" Wen Chao snapped.
"Wei Wuxian of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan," Wei Wuxian introduced.
"Even a nobody dares interrupt me!"
Those words stirred up unpleasant emotions inside of Lan Minghui. She clearly wasn't the only one; Wei Xingsi shouted out, "Who are you calling a nobody?!"
"My brother, Jiang Cheng, was just saluting now; how can you just burst in and shout like this?" Wei Wuxian demanded. "Is THIS how the Qishan Wen Clan educates others?"
"Today, I will show you how the Qishan Wen Sect deals with those who don't listen," Wen Chao declared.
Jiang Cheng wasn't having it. "Wen-gongzi, must you be so arro— aggressive?"
Wen Chao glared at him. "The Yunmeng Jiang Clan is ignorant of etiquette! If we don't give you a lesson, people will say that we don't stick to our principles!"
Funny. You accuse them of being ignorant of etiquette, yet you burst in on the ceremony like this?
Upon Wen Chao's orders, the members of the Qishan Wen Clan present drew their weapons. In defence, the other disciples in the classroom stood up and unsheathed their weapons, too. Before the situation could get worse, Lan Xichen played a melody on Liebing to make the swords drop to the ground.
Wen Ning and Wen Qing quickly apologized for the actions of their sect before explaining their situation. Lan Xichen agreed to let them stay, proceeding to send off Wen Chao.
***************
After the ceremony, Lan Biyun, Lan Minghui, Lan Wangji, and Lan Xichen left the Lanshi together.
"Biyun, Minghui, I saw that you two sat with Nie-guniang and Wei-guniang during the ceremony. It's nice to see you getting along with others," Lan Xichen remarked.
Lan Wangji, sounding nearly jealous, asked, "Why are you already getting comfortable with them? You two are often slow to trust."
Shit. How do I explain this?
Choosing her words carefully, Lan Minghui answered, "Well, we... we just wanted to make some friends outside of the sect. They seemed friendly."
"That's a good thing," Lan Xichen nodded, smiling. "Wangji, you should make some friends, too."
"No need," he answered flatly.
Damn you, Lan Wangji! Get together with Wei Wuxian already!
***************
Moments after Lan Minghui and Lan Biyun arrived at the back hill, Nie Yilian bounded up to them and hugged Lan Biyun.
Wei Xingsi also arrived. "Sorry to keep you guys waiting! A-Ying and Jiang Cheng are messing around again."
"It wasn't for long; don't worry," Nie Yilian reassured. "So... what have you been up to the past three years?"
Lan Minghui smiled. Ten years... Ten years later, the four of them were finally back together.
