A displeased expression settled over his facial features, Jiang Cheng slowly walked out from behind the statue.

"Wei Xingsi! Wei Wuxian! How dare the two of you just leave like that?" he hissed. "Did you know how worried I—how worried my sister was?"

"You could've come along with us, too," Wei Wuxian argued, frowning at his shidi.

"Then who would take care of A-Jie?!" Jiang Cheng cried.

"Jiang Cheng!" Wei Xingsi addressed sternly. "Over twenty of our martial siblings came with us. I'm positive that in the most dire of situations, at least one of them will have enough sense to activate a teleportation talisman and take Shijie back to Lotus Pier."

He glared at her, persisting to argue. "What if you're wrong, and none of them actually do?"

Nie Yilian stepped in. "Jiang-gongzi, there's no way to reverse what's been done now. True, Wei-gongzi and Xingsi here would've done well to be more considerate of your concerns, but now that they've come, they're here with us. Xingsi, you did make a valid argument about Jiang-guniang's safety, but due to the possibility that you assumed incorrectly, Jiang-gongzi has all the right to worry."

"Yilian has a point, you guys..." Nie Huaisang spoke up from the back of the group. "Jiang-xiong, since you're here, care to join us?"

"That's exactly why I came here."

***************

Jiang Cheng led the rest of the group outside the cave to Wen Qing, who was trying to lure the dire owl flying above them over to her with a torched branch. Nearby, the group of puppets that had attacked them were standing nearby, their movements clumsy and unfocused.

"Wen-guniang?" Wei Wuxian exclaimed in surprise.

Turning to face them, Wen Qing dropped the torch and looked at him with disappointment. "Jiang-gongzi, why are you still here with them? I believe I told you to get them and leave as soon as possible!"

"But Wen-guniang, what about you?"

Sparing a brief glance at the puppets, Wen Qing said, "Don't worry about me. I'll be fine."

"Wen-guniang, it's too late to do anything about the puppets," Wei Wuxian reasoned, assuming that she wanted to regain the puppets' spiritual cognition.

"There is a way," Wen Qing explained. "Right now, they're not manipulated very well. Wen Chao has only borrowed the Yin Iron's energy sealed onto the owl by Wen Ruohan to control them. If you really want to help them, first, kill the dire owl."

Wei Wuxian grinned. "You should've said so earlier! I've been wanting to kill that stupid bird for ages!"

"Wei Ying, set up a spiritual net around them to keep them safe," Lan Wangji ordered.

In the blink of an eye, a golden spiritual net manifested around Wen Qing, Nie Huaisang, Jiang Cheng, Lan Minghui, Lan Biyun, Nie Yilian, and Wei Xingsi.

"A-Ying, why did you lock me in here? You should let me come with you," Wei Xingsi protested.

"Wei Wuxian, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Jiang Cheng bellowed.
