"Lan-er-xiaojie," Jiang Cheng greeted cordially, standing up and saluting her as she arrived.

"Sect Leader Jiang," Lan Minghui replied.

Although Jiang Cheng always had a stern expression, Lan Minghui noticed that the lively spark that had once been in his eyes was gone.

"How are Lan-xiaojie and you?" Jiang Cheng asked, pouring a cup of tea for her. "We heard that the Wens attacked the Gusu front, which was where the two of you were last stationed, right?"

Feeling more and more suspicious that the Wens had deliberately spread this information, Lan Minghui shook her head. "Sect Leader Jiang, that is not true. Over the few months, large battles at the Gusu front have been far and in between. I believe that Sect Leader Jiang would benefit from information that comes directly from our allies and their respective areas."

She hadn't meant for her words to come across as condescending, but maybe Jiang Cheng interpreted them in such a manner.

"Lan-er-xiaojie, are you declaring me an incompetent leader?" he demanded, his anger thinly veiled.

Lan Minghui felt guilt flickering inside her. She'd seen Jiang Cheng suffer enough in the original story, but her being the cause of his distress made her feel terrible.

Quickly bowing her head, she said, "I apologize to Sect Leader Jiang for my unthoughtful words. I sincerely did not intend to insult you, but it seems my words came across in such a manner."

Jiang Cheng looked at her with a slightly disdainful manner. Lan Minghui stood her ground calmly, keeping her head lowered but stood unyieldingly.

"Fine," he huffed. "I'll take it as a lesson learned.

"So, Lan Minghui, what do you propose we do?"

Months later

Lan Minghui siphoned off the blood on Huari, her new white robes splattered with blood once again. The Sunshot Campaign had progressed further, thanks to Wei Wuxian's use and improvement of demonic cultivation. The Jiangling front had yet won another battle, though littered among the bodies enrobed in red were unmoving figures dressed in purple, white, and grey alike—their fallen allies.

Tears slipped down her face silently as she turned over the still body of Lan Meiqi. They hadn't been the closest of friends, but Lan Minghui had trusted and recognized Lan Meiqi as someone she could depend on. Now, Lan Meiqi lay facing up; her eyes still open with fear, grief, and pain. Blood—now dried—blossomed out of a stab wound from her stomach, its stench and color making Lan Minghui feel sick to the bone.

Returning back to the battle front's base, Lan Minghui was in half a mind to retreat to her private quarters and write to Lan Biyun and Lan Xichen, but it also felt selfish to not bother to help when she had escaped the battle mostly unscathed.

Sighing and collecting herself, she made her way to the healing tent.

"Wei Ying, your new form of cultivation—" She heard Lan Wangji say in a low, urgent tone.

"I get it, 'will harm my body and mind'," Wei Wuxian snapped. "I can control it! We won again today, because of my cultivation!"

"Come back to Gusu with me," Lan Wangji demanded sharply.

"I don't want, nor do I need, your judgement on this!"

(A/N): Surprise surprise guys, I'm not dead.

I've done a lot of editing over the past few weeks, like adding more personality and details to the story, checking grammer/spelling, etc. Sorry about the long wait~
