"Where is the troublemaker?" Liam walked straight into the apartment. Henry was stood in the kitchen. The kitchen hood was making a lot of noice, the frying sound coming from the pan didn't make it any better. Because of this he didn't hear the doorbell. They got tired of waiting for him so they walked in.
Henry looked up at the three guests when they walked into the kitchen. He turned down the warmth on the stove making the kitchen hood calm down a little.
"Hey!" He greeted, not hearing Liams question.
"Liam here has been restless to see Alma all day. I had to practically restrain him from going to her school like a creep." Sara rolled her eyes at her golden retriever boyfriend.
Henry smiled at him. He wouldn't have guessed anything else. "She should be down anytime now. She's been exhausted all day. She laid down for a nap two hours ago, and is still out." He took a quick glance at his watch.
He did not think over his words before he said them. He knew that if Alma had been there he would have been reprimanded for the word 'napping', lucky she wasn't there.
"Is she sick?" A wrinkle formed between Martins' eyes.
"No, just tired I think." Henry dismissed it. He lifted the food of the kitchen bench and walked over to the dining table where everything was set for dinner.
"Sit down. I'm going to get Alma."
They did as told. Liam could feel his stomach turning in anticipation. He was finally going to see the girl who was like a sister to him.
As he heard a bedroom door close, footsteps could be heard down the stairs. Some fast, and another slow.
Henry was the first to enter the dining room. He smiled at them and gave Liam a small wink before he sat down in his own seat.
Seconds later a tall, dark haired girl came walking in. Liam gave Sara a quick glance just to be sure that this was Alma. But Sara looked just as uncertain as her fiancé.
Alma came in with a smile on her face. She scanned the room, taking in the appearance of everyone around the table. Especially the two newest members.
She was a little unsure on what to do. After all she didn't remember very much about these people. She hoped seeing them would spark something inside her. Make her recognize them, but that didn't happen. At least not yet.
"Alma!" Liam didn't see the unsureness that was evident in her face. He leaped out of his seat and engulfed Alma in one of the best hugs Alma had gotten in a while.
Even if it was a comfortable hug, she wasn't sure how to react to it. When Liam only felt her arms embrace him slightly, he decided to let her go.
Now the two of them stood facing each other again, after so many years of separation. The older of them, Liam, remembered every tiny detail from their childhood together. He had been like a big brother to her, always there and always protective.
For the younger friend, Alma, it was different. She could feel a vague memory of him, but it was as if it was covered by a thin veil of forgetfulness. She knew he had been an important part of her childhood, but the details were hazy and uncertain.
When they met again, Alma felt overwhelmed by emotions. On the one hand, there was joy in seeing a friend from the past, someone who had been such a big part of her life. But at the same time, there was an underlying feeling of confusion and disappointment.
She wanted to remember all they had shared, all the good moments and special memories. But it was as if parts of her past had been lost in the mists of time.
Liam couldn't help but notice Alma's confusion. He had so many memories from their time together, so many moments that he cherished. Seeing her now, as a young woman, not remembering him as she used to, was like a punch to the gut.
But he also knew that memories were fragile things, and sometimes they just needed a little help to be awakened again.
