this chapter is more about Rosa bc i rlly wanted to give some closure to the side characters stories!!

I woke up after a night of terrible sleep. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. I adjusted my vision and saw a piece of paper near my sleeping mat. I picked it up. It was a letter. It was from Mary-Beth. It was a long letter. I sighed in frustration. It would take me an hour to read half of this.

I looked over at Karen. She was next to me with a drink in her hand.

"Hey, can you read this for me?" I asked and she smiled at me. "Hey, you're up."

"Yeah, can you-?" I started, but she interrupted me. "I ever tell you how-" Karen stumbled over her words. "I ever tell you how much I love you?"

"How much have you been drinking?" I asked pretty annoyed like. "It's morning."

"Oh, shut up." Karen scoffed.

"I'll just go ask someone else." I stood up. I got dressed and ready for the day.

I walked over to Sadie. She was standing over by the coffee pot. "Hey." I greeted and she smiled. "Hey, cowgirl." Sadie gave me a quick kiss.

"I was wondering if you could read this for me?" I handed her the letter and she nodded. "Of course."

Sadie held the letter in one hand and cleared her throat. "Dear, Rosa. I'm going away. It's sounds crazy to say, but I can't stay here any longer. I have known you since we were both kids. You have always been so kind to me. To leave is a hard thing to do, but regardless, I urge you to do the same. It isn't worth it anymore, i'm afraid. I will miss you deeply. Just in case you ever change your mind about leaving, i'll be in Valentine. It's familiar to me. Please, don't forget who you are. Love, Mary-Beth." Sadie finished reading.

I sighed and she gave me a sympathetic look. "Oh, i'm sorry, Rosa."

I thought about it. Mary-Beth. She was always sweet and gentle to me. I remember she was the first person I ever liked in that way. Mary-Beth would always read to me. I'm- i'm actually happy for her. I'm glad she got out.

"You okay?" Sadie asked and I nodded. "Yeah. I- I'm just... i'm really gonna miss her."

"I'm sure she'll miss you too." Sadie said and I nodded taking the letter back. "Uh," I placed it in my pocket. "What're your plans for the day?"

"I'm gonna go into Saint Denis with Dutch and Arthur. We're gonna see that son of a bitch swing." Sadie said and I nodded. "It's about time." I sighed. "You want me to come with?"

"I think us three is all that's necessary. You stay back and rest." Sadie told me. It really wasn't the response I was expecting.

Stay back? Rest? Why would I need rest?

"Okay." I nodded. "Sure."

Later that day, Sadie left with Dutch. I still didn't understand why she told me to stay back and rest. I didn't know why it offended me so much.

"Rest." I scoffed as I poured myself coffee. "No lo puedo creer." I looked around at our pathetic camp. We lost so many people.

I sighed and went over to the money box. I might as well contribute money. Maybe they could buy some decent food with this. The box came into view and I stared at it in confusion. It was destroyed. Beaten into pieces. The money was gone.

"Who-?" I shook my head angrily and placed my coffee down. I got in front of Dutches tent. "Did anyone see what happened to the money box?" I yelled out.

John and Javier who were sitting by the fire shook their heads. "No, Rosa." Javier answered.

"I was wondering the same thing." Susan said and I shook my head. "Who would do that?"
