I heard a knock at the door and stood from the couch. I groaned as I approached the door. I opened it to see a young mailman smile. "Carla Hernandez?" The mailman questioned and I nodded. "Yeah."He looked so familiar. Dark hair up to his shoulders.
"Got a letter for you." The young man handed me an envelope and I nodded. "Thank you."
"Of course." He walked away and I shut the door.
It was from Mary-Beth. "Huh." I placed the letter down at the nearby drawer.
I approached Sadie. "Can you read that for me later?"
"Mhm." She nodded. Sadie stood by the fireplace. The fire illuminated her face in a strange way. The rest of the house was weirdly dark.
I didn't understand why, because outside there was light. I didn't question it.
"Carla Hernandez, huh?" Sadie laughed approaching me and I smiled. "Well, I don't see you making an effort to disguise yourself."
"Oh, please." Sadie scoffed. "I live a life of honesty." She joked as she wrapped her arms around my neck. She rested her elbows on my shoulders and smiled at me. "I like Carla though."
"Yeah?" I questioned and she nodded. "Mhm." We began moving our bodies to the low music playing.
"Where's Tilly?" I questioned and she shrugged. "Not sure." Sadie chuckled. "Think it might just be us here, cowgirl."
"Well, that's not the worst thing." I joked and she smiled. Her face was a blur. Warm and blurry.
"S- Sadie?" I questioned as she rested her head on my chest. "Don't worry about it. Just let us have this, Rosa."
AUGUST 1911
I woke up to Copper sniffing my face. I pushed him away with a soft laugh. "Gross."
I rubbed my eyes and sat up. I processed my dream. I had a lot of dreams about Sadie. I saw her all the time. And everytime I awoke, I lost her all over again.
I sighed and looked down at Copper who now laid on Sadie's side of the bed. He whimpered and I gave him a small pet. "I know. I miss her too."
It had been two years since Sadie's passing and my life wasn't getting any better.
For two years i've had to live with this haunting loneliness. It never went away.
The sun shined through the curtains and the birds chirped outside. It was beautiful out. It was mornings like these that I missed Sadie the most.
I decided to go visit Sadie today. I woke up, ate a breakfast, and stopped by to buy a newspaper.
It was August so the mountains were warmer, and the snow wasn't harsh. I rode up there frequently to visit Sadie. I couldn't stay away.
I even had an old wooden chair near her grave. I liked to sit and talk. Sometimes I read her the newspaper. I know how much she loved keeping up with the news.
"Hm." I found a headline that Sadie might've been interested in. "Seems they're coming up with new ideas for them planes." I shook my head. "We don't need that..."
Sadie would've argued with me. She would've called me narrow minded.
"Maybe in heaven we'll fly." I coughed and held my chest. The cold air wasn't any good for my lungs.
"Looks like that women's movement is going along well." I read one of the headliners with a rasp. "I'd like to see who you'd vote for." I cleared my throat.
