Everytime I gazed at my polished golden trophy standing proudly on the shelf, memories from ten years ago came gushing back to my mind like a tsunami. At the same time I felt proud of myself but not without a price to pay...
"Let's join this 100m race competition, Emi!" My best friend Ella persuaded. I agreed to her request immediately. She grinned from ear to ear and pumped her fist in joy. After much discussion, we decided to train every Monday to Friday, for 2 hours each day. At first, we found it hard to follow the timetable and trainings set by our physical education teacher. We were required to run continuously around the school field for ten minutes! After a short break, we had to complete a routine of various strenuous excersises. By the time we finished all those, we were already drenched in sweat and panting uncontrollably. This was even tougher for Ella who had asthma at the age of six but she insisted on persevering. I persuaded my physical education teacher to change the regimen but he refused saying that we could never win if he did.
Ella took it personally and decided to train harder in order to win. As the big day drew closer, Ella began to train more vigorously. She would always end up collapsing on the ground after a muscle straining excersise. I was very worried for Ella but no amount of persuasion would change her mind.
Just three days from the race, Ella suddenly fainted on the field. I was at a loss for words and my knees went soft, I dropped like a puppet, my face pale with fear. Just then my physical education walked past. He saw Ella lying on the ground so he alerted her parents right away. After that, he called for an ambulance which came in no time. She was sent away to the hospital together with her weeping parents.
My physical education teacher told me,"The race must go on with or without Ella. Emi you need to train harder and bring Ella's determination to the race!"His words gave me the motivation I needed and I trained with more resolve.
Finally, the big day came, I stood on the tracks holding my head high."I hope you are watching Ella!"I thought to myself."Bang!"the gun was fired. The sound was deafening. I sprinted ahead of others, determined to win. I counted down the distance. "Almost there..."I mumbled to myself. The rest were already slowing down but I kept my pace.
Soon I crossed the finish line triumphantly."Yes!I won!"I yelled delightedly as I broke through the ribbon. I felt a sense of achievement as I was named the winner. I received the trophy from the organizer with gratitude. I was then asked to give a speech,"I would never have won without my best friend Ella. Her determination motivated my to win. I hope her a speedy recovery!"I announced. Loud applause sounded throughout the field.
