"We've got incoming!"
The trio were back on the Tardis. Jack was installing some new defence system while the Doctor and Winnie were manoeuvring the Tardis to fly as if she was on a Kamikaze mission. They were hit by a Dalek missile but except for a bit of a rumble there was nothing. Next to Winnie blue switches blinked. She narrowed her eyes suspiciously and switched them up. The shaking stopped.
"What the-?", both men looked at her. She just shrugged.
"The extrapolator's working", Jack went to explain, "We've got a fully functional forcefield. Try saying that when you're drunk."
"And for my next trick-", the Doctor announced as they landed, Rose and a Dalek materialising in the room, "Rose, get down! Get down, Rose!"
"Exterminate", Rose ducked just as the Dalek shot and so Jack shot the Dalek and took it out.
"You did it", Rose looked between the Doctor and Winnie and went to her sister to hug her, "Feels like I haven't seen you in years."
Winnie let out a watery laugh and pulled back to look at Rose, "We are so practicing the questions on The Weakest Link when we get home. Don't you ever scare me like that again."
They looked over at the Doctor who just smiled, "I told you I'd come and get you."
"Never doubted it", Rose smiled.
"I did", he came over to hug her as well, "You all right?"
"Yeah", she smiled when they pulled back, "You?"
"Not bad, been better"; he shrugged.
"Hey, don't I get a hug?", Jack piped up from the other side of the console.
"Oh, come here", they met in the middle and hugged with large grins.
"I was talking to him", he nodded over to the Doctor when they pulled back, "Welcome home."
"Oh, I thought I'd never see you again."
"Oh, you were lucky. That was just a one shot wonder. Drained the gun of all its power supply. Now it's just a piece of junk."
"Just like it was intended to be", Winnie smirked, knowing now that it used to be a defabricator that only had the use to undress the person it shot.
"I don't know, Winnie. I do think I could have gotten a use out of this."
"If you ever get a person to where you would need a defabricator, please-"
"That's enough now, Winifred", the Doctor interrupted her, "Please."
Winnie smirked, back to her cheery self now that Rose was back. Rose smiled but when she saw the Doctor's distressed look she got back on topic, "You said they were extinct. How comes they're still alive?"
"One minute they're the greatest threat in the universe, the next minute they vanished out of time and space", Jack reiterated.
"They went off to fight a bigger war", the Doctor looked bitter, "The Time War."
Jack's face fell, "I thought that was just a legend."
"I was there. The war between the Daleks and the Time Lords, with the whole of creation at stake", the Doctor looked down, seeming to relive that time in his life, "My people were destroyed, but they took the Daleks with them. I almost thought it was worth it. Now it turns out they died for nothing."
Winnie cautiously stood next to him and laid her hand down next to his, unsure if he wanted to be touched or comforted. But he put his hand over hers and squeezed.
