Janner, Kal, and Leeli stared with their family for a moment. The ships were coming to attack Anneria. "What do we do?" Leeli asked with a hint of fear. "Umm. I d-dont ..." Janner realized that he had no idea what to do.
"What about the guards? Can't we tell them?" Nia asked. "It's to late for that. I'm sure they already know." Kal said. "We need to g-get to the c-castle. We need to be there to protect our home." Janner said. Everyone agreed to the idea and they started off at a dead run.
Once they got to the back end of the castle, Kal looked beyond at the water. He started to think of a plan. Maybe if his family could get on a boat... "Guys wait!" He called before they went in. "Ok listen to me. Leeli, Galya, Sara, Aunt Arundelle, and Mom. You guys go with Thorn on a boat. There is supposed to be some by the water. Get on it and go. Get out of here and don't turn around. Thorn you go with them no matter what happens. We will stay and fight and meet you there." He explained.
Thorn looked like he wanted to protest but he looked at Leeli and nodded with finality. Janner nodded and turned to Sara, "It's a good plan. You have to go." Sara looked up at him in disbelief. Before she could say anything, Nia spoke. "No. I'm not doing that. Not again." She said strongly. "Momma please. It's the only way to get y-you guys to s-safely." Janner pleaded. "No! I agreed to do that with your father and I lost him and my mother. I'm not willing to lose you boys and more. I'm staying here." He said.
"Me to. I'm not leaving. Anneria is my home to. Why shouldn't I fight for it?" Leeli said. Janner looked down at Sara and she smiled. Janner sighed, "I don't suppose you are going to agree with our plan?" "Nope. I'm staying with you. No matter what you say." Sara said. Janner was about to protest but then he remembered what happened the last time he sent her away for safety.
While everyone was talking about it at once, Kal turned to Galya and took her to the side. "You should go. I don't want you getting hurt." He said. Galya shook her head and said, "Kalmar I can't. I'm not leaving you. I can't leave you. Please don't push me away. What if something happens to you? I couldn't live without you. Let me help. Please." Kal sighed and stared at her thoughtfully. "I guess you won't be convinced otherwise will you?" He asked. Galya smiled and laughed. She wrapped her arms around Kalmar's neck and said, "Nope. One thing you need to know about me, Kalmar Wingfeather, I don't leave the people I love." Kal smiled and kissed her. "Good. I don't want to leave you either." He said.
They walked back to the group and when Sara saw them come back, she spoke, "Look, we are waisting time. None of us our leaving no matter what you guys say. I want to fight for my home and that's what I'll do."
"Me to. This is my home to. I'm staying." Leeli said.
"I'm not leaving again." Nia said with strength.
"I'm not leaving any of you. You are family." Arundelle said.
"And I'm definitely not going anywhere." Galya said with a squeeze to Kal's hand.
"Okay then. I guess that settles it. Let's go. We don't have much time." Janner said. They all turned and went inside the castle through the secret back door.
Nia led the way through the tunnels. She kept mumbling things like, "Esben said it was this way." Or "I remember we went through here."
"Momma how do you know your way around here?" Leeli asked. Nia smiled over her shoulder.
"You're father took me down here many times. We would have practice in case the castle was ever infiltrated. When the fangs attacked, do you really think we just walked out the front door?" She asked.
"I guess I never thought about that." Janner said as he thought about what his mother had said. Then he realized with happiness that his voice was back to normal. There was no time to celebrate though.
"Alright everyone. In here." Nia said as she led them to a dead end.
"Uh Mom? I don't think this is the way." Kal said when he saw the dead end.
"Oh Kalmar, you need go learn that not everything is in plain sight." She said as she examined the stone wall carefully. "Fifth stone up... seventh stone to the right." She said quietly. Then she pressed a stone down and a passage way appeared. "Come on. This is the end of the dungeons so let's stay close." She warned.
They all made their way through the passageway and down the hallway of the dungeons. They passed empty cells and occupied ones. The people in there begging to be released but one look from Nia and their pleading stopped.
They made their way up the stairs and into the main halls of the castle. "We need to get to the towers. The guards are up there. We can help them any way we can up there." Artham said.
They started to make their way to the towers when Sara stopped and said, "Maybe we should all split up. There are more than one tower that we can help and get orders from. I think we should go in groups of two or three."
Everyone thought this over. It would cover more ground. But it would also split them up. And in a battle like this, who knows when they would see each other again.
"It's a good plan. But how will we split up?" Kalmar asked.
"I think you three should be together. Show the people of Anneria that the Jewels are fighting together." Arundelle said.
"What? No!" Janner and Kal said at the same time.
"Sara I'm not leaving you again!" Janner said as he looked at Sara.
"Yeah. Galya I can't leave you alone like that." Kal said to Galya.
Thorn walked over to Leeli while everyone was arguing about it. "Do you want to do this?" He asked her.
"Yes. I have to. I think the three of us together fighting will work. If we die fighting, then we died for Anneria just like Dad did." Leeli said without hesitation.
Thorn nodded and said, "Then you can go. I know you can do it." He pulled her into a hug. When they let go Leeli turned and looked at her family, arguing.
"Quiet!" Leeli yelled. Everyone stopped in surprise. "Look! This plan is the best we got. The Jewels need to be together. It will give people hope. I know that it's hard. We don't want to split up but if we argue and can't come to a decision, we are as good as dead! And Annieria will fall. Please. Stop fighting and hurry up!" She demanded.
Everyone was silent for a second. There was an uneasy silence. Then, Kal kissed Galya on the cheek, hugged him mom and aunt, and walked next to Leeli. Janner looked at Sara and kissed her. He did the same thing Kal did and walked beside his sister.
Galya joined Sara and Artham was with them. Nia and Arundelle joined Thorn. The groups were set. They knew that this was goodbye for now. For how long? They didn't know.
Before they left, Artham said, "The Jewels of Anniera. I have no doubt that this kingdom will prevail. As long as you three are fighting for it, nothing will destroy it."
Janner, Kalmar, and Leeli beamed with pride. "Go my children. You've made me so proud. I know you father would be to." Nia said with strength.
Sara gave Janner a smile and a nod. Galya smiled at Kal and Thorn nodded to Leeli. Then, the three groups separated and started to run to their own part in the battle.
