Lingering fears

In love, I fell, but not for him alone,
For you, my thoughts incessantly do roam.
Content alone, then thoughts of you arise,
An obstacle at times, yet kind and wise.

Your voice, a melody, your humor bright,
You bring both laughter and anxiety's bite.
His first love, a bond that seemed to end,
But lingering fears, his heart you may mend.

Confusion reigns within, my thoughts a maze,
You're beautiful, imperfect in many ways.
Desire for friendship, dreams of us two,
Yet anxiety turns you into my rue.

Forever crossing paths, it seems you'll be,
His past love, a bond that's hard to see.
For your child's sake, I wish you both well,
Though my presence, too, I long to tell.

I crave my space, security I seek,
Comparisons to you, a habit bleak.
We share similarities, it's true,
But his first love, forever, was with you.

Despite his love for me, strong and vast,
You'll always be his first, the die cast.
These wounds within, words fail to convey,
The ache of knowing, you'll never fade away.
