—First Person POV.—

"Therefore, your people are safe for the next two months, at least," He continued, glancing at me "I don't condone anyone wrongfully attempting to take it."

I wanted to sigh with relief.

"However, your father also sent a letter to the King, accusing me of murdering my eldest brother— Is there a reason I should not turn a blind eye when the Duke of Honshu decides to seize Kyushu?" The Prince bluntly inquires.

..Fuck.

I shook my head "Despite being a Duke, my father can be so impertinent— I'm sorry if it offended you."

I'm aware he is just staring at me now and I sell the act by averting my gaze "It's good you don't have to deal with a father like that."

"I wouldn't be so sure about that." He replies and when I turn back to face him—I catch the corners of the Prince's mouth subtly lifted upwards.

Did he just make a personal jab at the King?

My features flush as I let out a real laugh "Maybe, maybe— I don't think my father exactly accused you, he probably just mentioned the rumors."

My excuse and attempts at turning the conversation around made him nod slowly—quietly considering my words while watching me gradually die inside.

"Maybe." He eases off.

I caught a nearly indistinguishable "Does it feel like we're interrupting something..?" From the maidservant far off towards the door—and I'm internally cursing the Duke for making me have to find a solution for his mistakes.

I need to make the Prince see that Kyushu could be trusted as an ally—worthy of assistance if Honshu struck.

"You're shivering," He observed after a bit, his expression falling back into that impassive look before turning around and heading off "Let's go back inside."

I hadn't even noticed the chill until we wandered through the gallery and into the long hall, its lofty ceilings adorned with banners and frescoes.

At the top of the stairs, Lady Daki's sharp gaze met ours—but we quickly moved on, guided by Hagakure through the rest of the main floor.

She led us into the Prince's library, where business was conducted and the man at my side had grown notably silent as the servant continued on with the tour—now explaining their affairs.

The new form didn't seem to be bothering him anymore as he walked with less of a limp now and stood up to his full height.

The desk had a few papers casted over the top, right next to a quill for business—included for writing letters and documents while keeping all sorts of records and ledgers.

Hagakure looked past me to give the Prince a pointed look, and he cleared his throat—finally breaking his silence "Do you like commensuration, Lady (Y/n)?"

"Depends, only when the person I'm writing to is fun to talk with." I explain with a shrug, which was kind of true..

After all, storytelling was more my forte than penning letters—besides, with only a handful of friends who could read or write and a small family consisting of my father and younger brother, who would I even be communicating with?

The Prince's warmth dissipated as he left my side and approached the bookshelves "I have a few books you might enjoy reading, so feel free to take whatever catches your eye and enjoy it during your stay."
