—Third Person POV.—
"Read it for yourself."
There was a rustle of parchment as the chancellor lifted the letter to his eyes—skimming over its contents before blinking.
"Your Highness, the King is asking you to marry?" It wasn't supposed to come out sounding like a question—as the writing in his grasp clearly stated the following, but the surprise etched into his expression didn't cease as he looked to the man.
Being heir to the throne certainly came with a price.
Without a reply from the Prince, Ojiro's eyes scanned over the rest of the message "Do you know any of these ladies he's suggesting you marry?"
"No."
"Do you have one in mind you would like to ask?" The chancellor questioned—still in disbelief as his Highness shifted, lifting his left hand to rub at his eye in exasperation.
When he was just the third son of a power-hungry tyrant, a Prince who would not inherit anything—he could've taken all the time he wanted to choose a wife.
But everything was different now.
"I don't think I'll choose anyone," His voice replied truthfully—stating just what was going on through his head in that naturally inscrutable manner "For now."
"But, your Highness," Ojiro started up again, not bothering setting the letter down onto the desk and instead walking to stand beside him "You can't ignore a command from the King." He states.
Heterochromic eyes flicker onto the shorter man, one a light cerulean while the other was slowly growing clouded with flamelike illumination.
The scar usually presented along the left side of his face had hardened with blackened and charred scales—shifting beneath the moons lighting as the curse heated his body.
"I wouldn't call it a command," The Prince paused, turning away to watch the last bits of night cover the horizon "It's more of a suggestion."
"A suggestion from most people is a suggestion, but a suggestion from the King is a command." Ojiro remarked immediately, running a hand through his hair and trying not to stare at his Highness's new form.
His explanation was now accompanied with his eyes glancing over the letter once more, just to make sure what he was saying was correct "No, I think you need to choose a wife, and you need to choose one from among the noble ladies in his letter."
His dark eyes blink "He particularly mentions the daughters of the Duke of Kyushu and the Earl of Ikishima." The chancellor started to babble on, breaking down the many candidates presented.
So in short, he was expected to choose a wife based on who her father was—and the King had suggested the ladies whose fathers had feuded the most with Oyashima before him.
It was odd.
Well, it wasn't completely out of place for a King to want peace and unity among his realm.
But this was Enji Todoroki they are talking about, a man who would rather punch now and think later, with there being a lot more contention than peace in the last thirty or forty years—would he really try changing his game now?
His older brother, Natsuo, was in line before him to take over the realm—but when he defied his fathers wishes and married a woman the King did not approve, his title been stripped from him.
He chose to banish himself and gave the burden onto Shoto, the third born son with a curse.
The Prince would be expected to purchase peace and unity for the people of his country by marrying a lady without ever seeing her or knowing anything of her character or temperament.
