UNIVERSE: Moon AU (Four is the human, Three is the monster)

~~~
The next day was different for SMG3. Which was a pleasant change from the mindless hunting for food and staying warm each day like he was used to, but still, not much had changed.
Sure, he still thought about survival, and had to focus on not dying, but his mind was also filled with thoughts of that human. Three was starting to doubt that he'd see SMG4 again, but still hoped. Why did he like the human's presence so much?
He didn't know, but he still waited.
How he longed to hold SMG4 in his arms...
How he craved the feeling of Four's hand in his own again...
How he wished to see a smile from SMG4 one more time.
He didn't even remember how he knew about these hopes, or why he had them... Maybe SMG4 was someone he knew before turning into a Lapisblood? But... wouldn't SMG4 recognize him, then?
SMG3 let out a sigh as he sat down in his nest of scavenged human blankets. It was very important to him that he was warm when he slept, so he built his nest out of as many blankets as he could possibly obtain. If he got too cold... unspeakable things would happen. He wasn't sure what. Old memories, he supposed.
Closing its eyes, the Lapisblood snuggled into the nest.
Maybe if he had just... saved SMG4 sooner...
SMG3 closed his eyes to take a nap and soon drifted off to sleep.
~~~

Okay! No problem! So what if there still wasn't any good food to find today? SMG4 could just sneak into the city... making sure the Lapisblood didn't see him.

He was still a bit wary, after all.

Well... even if the monster did see him, that was... okay? Probably?

SMG4 was still conflicted about how he felt about Three. He wanted to believe the Lapisblood, but it's hard to trust a creature known for killing humans, especially when they look similar to a loved one. It's just unnerving.

However, he had already walked all the way over here, so there wasn't any turning around now.

"Hello?"

Silence.

That was good. SMG4 kept walking, making sure to look in all the buildings, but every time he found something, it just wasn't good enough. A half-browned apple. Food a few months past the best-by date. Canned vegetables. Vile.

Before he knew it, Four was at the edge of town. If he had the patience to search deeper in the piles of discarded supplies and food, he might have found something, but he wanted to leave as soon as possible. Oh-

There was a Lapisblood nest in this building.

The building was one of the slightly-more-intact ones, even with a roof. The floor was mostly clear of trash and debris, but there was a corner of the room with various miscellaneous objects, all in a pile.

The "nest" itself seemed to be made up of many blankets in a pile. And in the nest lay a sleeping Three.

He looked so peaceful, laying there with his wings folded and his eyes closed, probably dreaming a happy dream. Or... some kind of nightmare. Maybe. Lapisbloods were not known for being very good at expressing themselves.

SMG4 felt a pang of guilt as he saw Three's face. He had SMG3's purple color, his hair color, his skin, his face- for the most part.

SMG4 wondered if, by some miracle, it was him.

What if it was?

What if Three, curled up in a nest of discarded blankets here was SMG3, and-

And it was all Four's fault?

He wished he could have held on.

He wished SMG3 never fell.

He wished he could have spoken with SMG3 one last time, before...

Chirp?

Oh- it had woken up.

"...Four?" The Lapisblood spoke in a quiet, sleepy voice as he sat up in his nest. His eyes were droopy, SMG4 noticed, just like his ears and tail.

"You look sad," SMG4 said without thinking.

Three gave Four a funny look. "This is how I always look... You look tired."

"Well... that's how I always look."

The two of them stood in silence, not sure how to go on with their conversation. There was something wrong. Seeing Three look so sad, even if it was his "normal" expression, didn't feel right... for some reason. And seeing Four, someone Three had only just met, look so tired was concerning to Three.

"Do you want to come in?" Three asked. "This nest isn't much. But there aren't any other Lapisblood nests in this area, so I'd say it's safe to stay around here for a while."

To be honest, SMG4 was still a little scared of Three, so he accepted. The place wasn't too bad... the Lapisblood's nest looked comfortable enough, and it was interesting to Four how Three had his little collection of scavenged things. About half of it was canned food, but there were also things like shiny rocks, pieces of metal, and also a lot of blue things.

SMG4 picked up a blue flower. A cerulean bloom. An azure blossom. It had to have been picked recently, considering it hadn't withered yet.

"What's with all the blue?"

Three picked up a small scrap of blue fabric. "I like the color. If I find something blue, it goes in the treasure pile."

"Treasure pile?" SMG4 asked. "Like... a dragon's?"

"I suppose so."

The shiny things were starting to make sense. SMG4 sat down in the pile. "Am I a treasure now, too?" he asked jokingly.

"Maybe." Three went up to Four and sat down beside him, curling up on the pile with his head rested on Four's chest. "Maybe you are a treasure. I'll have to guard you now. You can't leave anymore, you can't go-"

"Never mind, then!"

The two sat in silence for a moment, neither one knowing what to say next.

"You know," SMG4 said, "you remind me a little bit of someone I used to know, before... all this,"

Three looked intrigued.

"Really?"
