UNIVERSE: Well AU (Three is the human, Four is the monster)

~~~
Four sat close to SMG3's little campfire, watching the flames with wide eyes. It was dark out, and despite having decent night vision, they still didn't want to l̶e̶a̶v̶e̶ y̶e̶t̶ risk flying into a tree and hurting themself. SMG3 had decided to let it stay a little longer.
"3?" he asked.
"Hm?" SMG3 looked up at Four. "Yeah?"
"What was it like... for you, before the... well... everything?"
SMG3 tilted his head."The apocalypse?"
"Yeah, that."
The two had grown slightly more comfortable talking about their lives now. The Lapisblood's questions didn't seem malicious, at least.
"I dunno," said Three. "I had a lot of goals. And friends. Sometimes they tried to help me, but nothing really came of it. I opened a cafe, but it made me a failure. I don't even know where my friends are, or if they're even alive."
Four frowned, walking over to the other side of the campfire to sit next to SMG3. The Meme Guardian noticed and shifted away a little bit, but didn't say anything.
"Sorry," he said, "I just-... it feels like I could have done so much more. I would have done more if... I knew that there was so little time left to live normally."
Silence.
"But... that must not be very interesting to you," SMG3 mumbled. "Let's see. Friends..."
Four listened.
"There was this ginger and her... gamer friend? I didn't talk to them as much, but they were cool. There were two annoying, fat italians. Uhh, the drug dealer and the weeb. The psychopath and the demigod with narcolepsy. And... yeah. That's... about it." SMG3's voice faltered a little bit as he said that last part.
"Really?" Four asked. Skepticism.
"I... guess... there was also... SMG4. But he wasn't, like... a friend. I don't know..."
"What d'you mean?" Four asked.
"Just..." SMG3 sighed. "He wasn't just a friend to me. And I don't know what we were, or what we could have been, and... it makes me really think. And it still keeps me up at night sometimes, not knowing if he felt the same, or if he even considered us friends in the first place... and sometimes it scares me to think that he's dead, and other times it scares me to think he's alive..."
SMG3 slumped over, leaning against Four now. The Lapisblood was a bit surprised, but didn't move, not wanting to upset Three even more.
"...god, look at me.." SMG3 closed his eyes, gently running a hand through Four's hair. "...petting one of the guys who put the world in this mess." What's happened to me?
This guy was making Four's mind feel weird. Like he remembered something, and then forgot it, and was trying so hard to remember it now...
Something about Three was bugging him.
This guy was important. More important than he remembered- who was he...?
Who?
God, this was annoying.
"If it makes you feel any better," Four mumbled, "even though I'm... like this... now... y'know, forgotten a lotta stuff... I think I had someone like that too."
Oh?
SMG3's eyes lit up a little bit, and he looked over to Four.
"Y-yeah. Don't remember them well... but I know I liked being with them. And it's just... frustrating that I can't... just can't... remember."
Silence. SMG3's mind was going wild with thoughts, mostly hopes- that this Lapisblood might, just might be...
"3, what's the word for when you... remember something, but it's an emotion?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like... it made you happy, but now it just makes you sad,"
"Oh. That's nostalgia."
"Hm." Four went back to his thoughts now. Still occasionally glancing at SMG3's sweater.
Of course, SMG3 noticed. "Hey, buddy. What is it?"
"Purple," Four said.
"Uh... yeah. My sweater is purple. What about it?"
"Makes me feel nostalgia."
