a/n: im pulling a michael bay and making a purposeful continuity error: annie stays a baby LMAO. this chapter is mainly filler, but next chapter will officially get into the AOE timeline <3 also Ironhide is such a dork istg

Life had gotten relatively quiet within the two years since the second battle in Chicago. True to William's word, Baby and I had to stay with him for the first summer, which wasn't entirely a bad thing in retrospect. The initial meeting of his wife, however, had been...interesting.

Baby had stayed oddly quiet when we rolled up behind Ironhide and Will, a woman and a baby sitting on the front porch waiting with an excited smile on her face. She seemed a bit confused to see Baby and I, and when I slipped out, Will hadn't waited to embrace and kiss the woman. With a startled realization, I had figured out that this was his wife and actual daughter.

I was slow to approach, shouldering a donated rucksack close as Will glanced at me. He smiled encouragingly, gesturing to me to come closer while glancing back to his wife.

"Sarah, this is (Y/n). Remember the girl I was telling you about?"

The fact that Will had spoken about me to his wife sent my mind reeling, and Sarah smiled at me, nodding.

"Yes, I remember. It's so nice to meet you, honey. Will never stops talking about you."

Sarah was a hugger, that I had found out once she brought me in with one arm. I was surprised, but slowly embraced her anyway, and I stuttered out, becoming embarrassed.

"Oh! U-um, it's...it's nice to meet you too, Mrs. Lennox."

I must not have been able to mask my embarrassment when the woman laughed lightly at me, Will grinning slightly as he watched with excited eyes.

"Please, Sarah is just fine. Would you like to meet Annie?"

She gestured the baby out to me, and every cell in my body froze when she made an encouraging nod to her while holding her out. I wasn't given ample time to refuse, so I awkwardly held Annie, the baby looking up at me with a giggle and grabbing onto my shirt tightly.

"Wow, I um...hello there."

My face went hot when Sarah and Will laughed at me, and I handed her back gingerly, swallowing thickly as I admitted.

"Ah, sorry...I'm...not used to being around little kids."

Sarah shook her hand at me dismissively as Will held Annie close, making cooing noises to her as he walked a bit away, rocking her all the while.

"I was an only-child, so I understand. Come on, I'll show you to your room. Are you hungry? I just made some subs."

And that had been that. We had all eaten lunch together after Sarah showed me to my room, and admittedly, I had avoided the space and the family at all costs during the first three months I had spent here in fear of disrupting what they already had. Instead, I had found myself in the garage, playing around with a vehicle I had found that was collecting dust beneath a moth-eaten tarp.

It was a red 1963 Pontiac Catalina, and it had become a new project for me to focus on so I wasn't going crazy with cabin fever. At times, Will would come to the garage to hang out with me while I worked, and it brought a comforting sense of nostalgia for me. Once again, I was drenched in the scent of oil and grease, and I was back in my comfort zone with Will bullshitting me the whole while.

Baby tended to avoid being out of the garage when Sarah would come out, but I hadn't been able to figure out why. Baby had become a closed-off box of curiosities, and I just couldn't get him to crack.
