"Mutation. It is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward."

60 miles out from Los Angeles, California, an old warehouse sat decrepit but not abandoned. Some windows had been knocked out, and graffiti painted the outside walls. Vines crawled up the walls and in through the windows.

Trees grew haphazardly, uprooting the cement in some areas. Inside, the warehouse looked more like a greenhouse. Different flora and fauna lined the room. At the center, a woman sat on a throne made of the roots of the nearby plants.

A haggard, choking sound echoed throughout the empty warehouse. A man hovered above the ground, his toes barely scraping the floor.

Thick vines wrapped around his waist, keeping him in the air while more were around his neck.

"Do you know why you're here Mr.Hartley?" the woman asked.

Fred Hartley, the CEO of Union Oil, struggled in the grip of the vines. He let out a strangled noise as he tried to answer her.

"Only about six miles from here your company dumped three million gallons of oil into the Pacific Ocean," the woman said as she stood up. "And you, Mr.Hartley refused to call it a disaster because, and I quote, no humans died. So, I suppose if I kill you now, it'll officially be a disaster."

Before she could tighten the vines around his neck, she heard a woman's voice in her head.

"Eden, stop."

Eden turned around, trying to spot where the voice was coming from. "Is that you?" she asked, looking at Hartley who just confusingly shook his head.

"Eden, let him go," the voice said again.

Eden closed her eyes, communicating through the plants until she sensed three people standing outside. Sighing, Eden tossed Hartley onto her thrown, wrapping him in vines to make him stay put.

"I'm so sorry, Mr.Hartley but there's people near my Linden trees. Be right back" Eden said, walking outside. There was a girl with red hair staring right at her. A man in a wheelchair stood behind her.

"Eden, we're here to talk," the girl said, her voice still inside Eden's head.

"Your lips aren't moving. How did you do that?" Eden asked.

"I'm a mutant. Like you. We all are" the girl said.

"Right. Well, I'm rather busy and unfortunately not interested in buying whatever it is you're selling" Eden said, walking up to her. "I think it's time you leave now."

Eden blew a small puff of pink air at the girl's face, expecting it to take effect instantly. But the girl just smiled as the man in the wheelchair began to speak.
