"Good morning, Jason."
Jason: "Hello, sir."
I sat at my desk and noticed a small box with different labels on it.
Jason: "Your order arrived, sir. I'm sure you've noticed."
I read the box labels.
"Yeah.."
Jason: "You also got a message from your hematologist. She would like to remind you to schedule an appointment to discuss her findings."
I was about to open the box, but I stopped to think instead. What the heck is a hematologist?
Jason: "Er... Your blood analysis, sir? The one for you and... someone named Lachlan?"
"Oh! The blood test thing. Right.. I keep forgetting."
I grabbed a notepad and wrote a reminder for myself. Lachlan and I had gotten tests done a while ago so we could know for sure if Lachlan was a prototype or a doll. He was probably both, but I wanted to know if he'd have the option to go to the human world or not.
"Maybe later today I could.."
Jason: "You didn't forget about tonight's Charity event, did you?
At 7pm?"I looked around for one of my many calendars. I was a mess.
"Um, charity event..? For what?"
Jason: "For cancer research. The one you planned last month?"
His voice had an annoyed tone. I was annoyed with myself too. My memory really sucked sometimes.
"I kind of forgot about that.. but I'll attend that for sure. It's at the gymnasium, right?"
Jason: "The town hall, actually."
My shoulders dropped.
He sighed and said that he would get all the details and send them to me. Again. He left the room after scoffing at my unprofessional behavior."I probably have to write a speech for that, don't I..?"
The thought of talking in front of hundreds of people always made me want to puke.
I opened the box after cutting the tape and pulled out a small stick with a rainbow flag on the end of it. I waved it around and the sound made me smile. I placed it into a mug that I only ever used for pencils. Suddenly, my phone buzzed.
"its_lou" has followed you
I tilted my head.
"Since when does Lou have Instachat..?"I looked at his profile. It was still new with no profile picture, no bio and no posts.
I wondered what he was doing right then. I went back to my profile and wondered what he thought. I wondered if he had seen my post. It was the only picture of myself I felt comfortable posting.
I followed him back and found myself smiling at his name.Jason walked back in and placed a paper onto my desk.
"Thank you."
He noticed the little flag on my desk and rolled his eyes a little bit.
Jason: "Do you need anything else, sir?"
"Um, no.. Wait. If you can, do you think you could get someone else to do the speech tonight? I just don't like doing those kinds of things.."
Jason: "It's your duty to do that. The most I can do is help you write the speech. But you will have to read it for whoever attends."
"Oh..."
He turned to leave.
"J-Jason?"
He turned back around to look at me.
"Um... Do you.. hate me?"
He seemed caught off guard.
I'd never asked anything like that before. I knew I was a mess. I knew I was forgetful. But sometimes it felt like he didn't want to be there.Jason: "I don't hate you. But I'll say this; I don't understand you. A mayor should be someone responsible. Someone mature. A leader. You're none of those things. When it comes to doing the important tasks, you'd rather pass it off to someone else."
"But, that's not it. I just have trouble with public speaki-"
Jason: "I'm speaking."
This feeling was familiar to me. It reminded me of a certain person. I shut up and put my head down. My heart felt like it was sinking.
Jason: "I have no idea why Ox chose you, but you are not fit to be mayor. Lucky for you, there is no other option at the moment. So, no. I don't hate you. But do I wish someone else could fill the role? Someone responsible? More qualified? Yes, yes I do."
He walked towards the door again.
Jason: "And take that disgusting flag down. This is a workplace. Not a gay parade."
He shut the door behind him. And I was left with my mouth open and glossy eyes.
I sniffled and took the next thing out of the box. A stuffed bunny with a rainbow collar. The fur was a light brown and soft.
I think what hurt the most was that Jason wasn't even wrong.
He was right about everything.
I hugged the bunny and brought my knees up. I knew he was right in the end.
But it still hurt.
