Rainy days always got me down on my luck. The clouds seemed to dampen the mood, and bring a bitterness of bad luck afterwards.
Today was not unlike any other rainy day, unfortunately.
-------- Aether POV
I looked up at the dark clouds and sighed exasperatedly. It seemed like it was going to rain... and I didn't have an umbrella. I'd have to walk home in the rain. This always happened.
I started running home, hoping to get back before it started raining. Of course luck was not on my side this evening, as it started raining when I was no where near home.
I groaned as the rain started pouring down, soaking me. I really did not want to have to come home all wet like this, Xiao probably wouldn't be happy to see me not taking care of myself and forgetting an umbrella, despite knowing that it might rain today. I mentally cursed myself for being so stupid.
So.. that's what started the fight with Xiao.
-------- 3rd POV
Aether walked inside, kicking off his shoes as he did so. He was soaking wet from the rain, and not in the best of moods.
He took out his braid as he walked inside, brushing his fingers through the wet, knotted hair. He called out to his partner when he walked into the living room, "Xiao! I'm home!"
Xiao replied a moment later, not yet walking into the living room where Aether was. "Welcome home."
Aether took off his shirt, putting it in the laundry room while he looked for dry clothes. Once he found some, he changed in the bathroom, also bringing a towel to dry himself off.
He left the bathroom after a few minutes of being in there, still drying his hair off with a towel. "I take it you had to walk home in the rain?" Xiao asked after glancing up at the blonde. "Yeah. Didn't bring an umbrella."
"I told you to bring one, did I not?" Xiao sighed, finally looking up at Aether. "Well, the weather report didn't say that it was a 100% chance of rain! How was I supposed to know it actually would rain?" "You bring one just in case, Aether!"
The disagreement really only escalated from there, both parties had valid arguments, but the entire conflict was a bit silly. It was unnecessary, and they didn't usually fight, like, ever. Maybe it was the sour rain bringing down bad luck on the two. Who knows.
It didn't take long for the argument to de-escalate, it's not like it was actually something that was serious that they were disagreeing over, after all.
But now they were sitting on two sides of the couch in the living room, completely silent and stubbornly not wanting to talk to each other.
The silence was broken after several minutes of neither party speaking up, this time it was Aether. "... I took a picture of a cat on my way home from work. Do you wanna see?" He asked, turning to Xiao, who was still looking away. He was probably considering it, seeing as he didn't speak for a moment or two.
"Sure." The ravenette nodded, turning to Aether and looking at his phone. Aether then pulled up the picture from his camera roll, showing a black cat with two coloured eyes, one blue and one yellow.
(AN: Did you know it's actually rare for a cat with dark fur to have heterochromia- or in other words- two different coloured eyes?! White cats are more prone to having two different coloured eyes!!)
"Cute." Xiao nodded simply, giving a simple reply. "I know, right? We should get a cat!" "We do not have enough time for a cat, hun." Xiao said, turning down Aether thought immediately. "But we could get someone to feed it while we are away at work." The blonde countered, giving a small chuckle.
"Even so, we would need to build a bond with the cat. Neither of us are home very often, and you know that, Aether." Xiao spoke, obviously having more reasoning than Aether.
The ravenette chuckled as he watched Aether pout, giving him a soft kiss to the forehead, this was like a sweet aftertaste of a miracle fruit. Aether smiled gently, giving Xiao a few kisses of his own on the ravenette's face.
Their fights were never long, and the sweet after bitter was always longer. It was quite cute, actually.
-------- Omake
The clouds started to clear, letting the rays of sunlight peak through. The light after gray was always so pretty, to Aether at least. Xiao couldn't really care too much about what the weather looked like.
Currently, they were both situated on the couch, Aether leaning on Xiao shoulder while watching the latter do whatever on his computer.
"Hm? Oh, the clouds are starting to clear up!" Aether spoke, looking out the window. Xiao looked up at Aether's words, turning towards the window as well. "So they are." Xiao nodded, before returning back to what he was doing beforehand.
Aether got up, walking towards the glass door that led out to the balcony. He noticed an animal on their balcony. Then recognized it as the same cat that he'd seen before.
The blonde's face immediately lit up as he opened the door and went outside. After a few minutes of trying to get the cat to trust him, he eventually was able to pick her up and bring her inside.
"Aether, why do you have that cat."
"Can we please keep it? Until we find it a home at least?? It doesn't have a collar!" Aether pleaded, his hand slowly stroking the dark fur of the cat.
"... Fine."
