After taking a shower, Jay went downstairs to make dinner. The house was quiet, so he decided not to bother anyone to keep it that way. He popped his AirPods in to vibe out to some music while he cooked. He looked through the fridge to see what he might be in the mood for tonight. Not feeling like spending too much time in the kitchen, he chose something that was simple and easy. Jay groaned quietly to himself the second that he thought about his wife. He knew she had every right to be upset with him, but why did she have to abruptly end their conversation the way she did? It had begun to make him anxious because as well as he knew his wife, he knew that she could be complex sometimes. 'No' could mean 'yes' and 'yes' could mean 'hell no.'
'Is she really just going to drop it?' He thought to himself, but he would be foolish to ever think the answer to that question would be 'yes.'
"Daddy?" He heard from behind him, breaking him from his thoughts. Rumi smiled up at him innocently while holding something behind her back.
"What is it, babygirl?" He said already knowing that she broke something.
"I broke my necklace by accident." She said finally revealing what was in her hands. "Can you give it to mommy?"
"Uhn uhn!" He shook his head immediately. "You gotta tell mommy yourself. I already–" He stopped himself from giving too much information. He was already on her bad side and he knew that delivering more bad news would fuel her fire whether it was his fault or not. "You gotta tell her yourself." Rumi whined, but he only shook his head to stop her. "You broke it, not me." She sighed and said that she'd tell her mother after dinner, hoping that food would butter her up. "Go do something else now, I'll call you for dinner." Jay said as a way to get her out of the kitchen, so he could finish cooking in peace.
After close to an hour, He was finally finishing up with cooking. Jay called his family to the kitchen so that he could fix their plates for dinner. He was hungry and he'd made salmon, corn, and green beans that smelled so good, he couldn't wait to sit down and eat. First in line, JJ came flying in to get his food. "You want everything?" Jay asked.
"No, thank you, I don't like corn." Jay nodded his head and gave him everything except the corn. JJ liked something different everyday it seemed. One day he loves corn, next day he hates it. Jay just shrugged it off and got a plate for the next kid. Rumi was excitedly holding her plate up for him to take, he knew Rumi was the least pickiest eater, she practically ate everything, kind of like him.
"Where's mommy?" Jay asked once Blue had come in alone.
"She's braiding her hair, she said she'll be down in a minute and you don't have to worry about fixing her plate." Blue explained once she'd gotten her food.
Jay shook his head and fixed B a plate anyway. He wasn't going to eat without her, though, so he sat both of their plates to the side and waited while the kids ate. He stood around and just watched the kids hold their little kid conversations. They talked about school, their friends, their games, and anything else kids talked about. "JJ, close your mouth while you eat." Jay complained.
"Sorry." He mumbled. "It was important." He paused and swallowed before continuing on with his story. Jay shook his head at him, the way he was so dramatic was hilarious at times. It was hard not to laugh.
"JJ, I bet you can't beat my high score on the new game on Roblox!" Blue teased.
"It's not fair, you found it first, so you had more time to practice. I'm still learning."
"You'll never beat it though, it's too high." JJ groaned and the two of them immediately started going back and forth.
"Y'all done?" Jay interrupted before they continued to argue. They all nodded, so he collected their plates and gave them juice. "Come back in an hour for a snack. Go play." They all slurped down their cup of juice and ran off to go finish whatever they were doing before. Just as he began to wash their dishes, his stomach growled and it made him groan again. He was starving, but he refused to eat without his wife today. Especially because he knew that she was probably mad at him and eating without her would give her more fuel to be upset, so he thought.
