Jay walked into the hospital with a smile on his face. He was super excited to see his wife, although he hated that she was in the hospital in the first place. He knocked on the door and went right in. "Hello, my love!" He greeted, but immediately noticed that she was sleeping. He placed everything down and came to her side to wake her up gently. "Hey, baby." He grabbed her hand and gave it a little kiss. When he realized she wasn't waking up, his heart beat sped up. "B?" He said and shook her a little more heavily. "Beyoncé!" He yelled out more frantically than before.
"Oh!" Dr. Moore said coming into the room. "You're finally here."
"What's going on, Dr. Moore?" Jay asked in almost a panicked tone. "Did something happen? Is B okay? She's not responding."
"Not really." She started. "She's been having some pretty serious complications."
"Complications?" He felt his heart sink straight to the core of the earth. His chest became tight as if something were wrapped around his body, squeezing the life out of him. "Is– is she going to be okay?"
"Well, that's up to you." Jay furrowed his brows, but didn't respond right away because he was confused. "One of them is not going to make it." Dr. Moore informed him.
Jay immediately snapped his neck to his wife who was lying in the bed right next to him. "What?" He said in disbelief and directed his attention back to Dr. Moore. "Stop playing. Y'all are just fucking with me, right? B, stop playing, baby, this shit isn't funny." He tried to force out a laugh to convince them all that this was a joke. He just knew for sure that this could not be his reality right now.
"Unfortunately, I'm serious." Dr. Moore said with an apologetic look on her face. "And I absolutely hate this for you, but... you are going to have to pick. It's all up to you. This is in your hands."
"Oh, hell no! Pick?!" He exclaimed in utter disbelief. "How can I pick?! I can't pick!" He quickly shook his head. The thought of that seemed impossible for him. What if he picked his wife? Would she be mad at him for it? Would she resent him for being the one that chose to let their baby die? But, what if he picked the baby? He wouldn't have B there to help. Four kids would grow up without a mother and the way that Blue, Rumi, and JJ were all attached to her, he would feel terrible. He just couldn't choose. He couldn't.
Dr. Moore impatiently waited for his response. "You have to choose, Jay." She rushed. "We don't have that much time. You have to choose, not us."
"Who is more likely to survive?" He asked and hoped that the answer would make his choice easier.
"It's fifty/fifty. Now what?" He groaned deeply because that only made it worse for him.
"I can't..." Jay hesitated as he eyed his wife. He loved B more than anything, there was no way he could let her go... but, it was also his child, an unborn soul that he had already learned to love.
"Choose." Dr. Moore said sternly. Jay closed his eyes and shook his head again.
"I need more time to decide." He begged. There was no way for him to make this decision on a whim. He needed time to think and weigh his options. He was conflicted.
"There is no time!" She yelled. Jay was starting to get dizzy. The room began to spin all around him and all he heard was Dr. Moore repeatedly telling him to choose between his wife and child. "You have to choose!" She repeated in a rushed tone. "Choose, Jay! Now!"
"No." He said quietly and glanced at B again, fighting his hardest not to full on break down in tears.
Dr. Moore folded her arms across her chest. "Choose or we have to let them both die."
