I lay sprawled on the dusty floor, my breath coming in sharp sips.

Han panted on his knees. He, too, had been electrocuted.

We were the last ones bearing a collar.

The kidnappers had activated them.

A rattling sound filled the room. I braced myself for another electric shock, but the sound wasn't that of electricity. It echoed in the hallway as if there were multiple sources for the sound.

My eyes shot up to the ceiling, which seemed to be the primary location of the noise.

At the ceiling's edge hung a weathered speaker, a relic from the building's operational days. It appeared to be the type linked to the building's central radio system, designed to relay instructions to workers.

A warning reverberated from the aged device:

"Return to the pool immediately or face repeated electrocution every ten minutes, with the intensity increasing each time.'"

Sunghoon knelt by my side.

"Let's take it off quickly."

He brushed my hair off the collar.

I pushed myself up to a sitting position.

If he removed my collar now that it was on, the kidnappers would hear the alarm and find us in no time.

"It will peep. Remember? That's what happened when you tried something with the needle."

Sunghoon shook his head.

"I'll take it to pieces. It won't peep if I do it right. Besides, they are not near because they didn't find us even though you and Han got electrocuted. That was pretty loud."

The others exchanged uncertain glances, torn between hope and fear.

Han scrambled up, picking up the screwdriver that Minho had dropped before.

"Come on. Someone take mine off, too."

Yunho accepted the tool, but his sharp eyes shifted to Jungkook.

"Let's quickly take off your bracelets," he said, pointing at the BTS member. "It'll make them think you died after the last electrocution."

Han's mouth fell open.

"But... What about me. The bracelets don't matter. They don't shock us, right?"

I had thought the bracelets electrocuted us, but now it was proven to be a misconception. Even if they served to conduct the electricity and make it course through our bodies dangerously, the bracelets didn't do anything without the collar.

Yunho had another view.

"They measure our heartbeat. They'll know we took off our collars if they see Jungkook is still alive," he said.

Jungkook shrugged.

"So what. They've already seen it. My heartbeat didn't change during the last electrocution."

"Maybe they didn't have time to pay attention to that," Yunho persisted, seizing Jungkook's wrist and unscrewing the screws.

Han stared at Jungkook, who allowed his arm to be lifted for the procedure.

"Your heartbeat didn't change during the last shock? You weren't worried about me and Filina at all?" Han questioned.

Jungkook sighed, casting a bored glance at the Stray Kids member.

"That's not what I meant."

Han crossed his arms, shifting impatiently.

"Please hurry, Yunho. I'll get another shock soon."
