"Dear God!" Kang exclaimed, lowering the phone from his ear.
The white Jeep reversed from the edge of the hill, its engine rumbling as it accelerated to take off. We couldn't see the driver through the tinted windows. The license plate was covered with green duct tape.
"Hey! Hey! STOP!" Kang shouted, running after the disappearing vehicle.
The Superintendent General Mole took his acting role seriously, pretending to worry about us.
"Is everyone okay? Luckily, you all got out of the car. What a relief."
A colder reaction would have been more believable. It wasn't Kang's style to worry about others.
Suk extended his hand, palm facing up.
"May I speak to the chief?"
Kang pulled his phone close to his chest, shielding the screen.
"He already hung up."
Sure, he did... I would have liked to see the call log.
"Can you call him again?" Suk asked, maintaining politeness toward the higher-ranking officer.
It was a tough situation. Kang was the only one with a mobile phone and a gun. We were completely at his mercy.
"I will call him again and inform him of the new situation," Kang said, swiftly swiping and tapping the screen.
"Hello. I'm reporting a new development. Our car was pushed down a hill. It was a hit-and-run situation. A white Jeep with a covered license plate fled the scene."
He paced in place, shifting weight from one leg to the other.
"Yes." He glanced at Suk, who gestured for the phone. "Senior Inspector Suk wants to speak with you."
Suk took the phone, and Kang kept his hawk-like eyes on him, standing close to overhear the conversation.
"I believe this was a targeted attack. Superintendent General Kang discovered the tire was punctured and called you from a safe distance. The rest of us had just exited to stretch our legs when the crash occurred."
Suk turned around, gazing at the spot where our car had been.
"I understand. I apologize for the inconvenience, but we suspected a leak within the force. That was the best way to test our suspicions and see if we could find the idols." He furrowed his brow. "Do you think it will be safe?"
I wanted to hear what the Chief of Police would say, and I wasn't alone in this desire. Kang's eyes drilled into the back of Suk's head. He was aware of our suspicions. Perhaps that was why he had attempted to get rid of us. Suk and Lim believed there was a mole in the police force. Sunghoon and I poked our noses into cases Superintendent General Kang had manipulated to save Hari from further investigation. The four of us were the main witnesses to Kang's unfair and corrupt behavior.
"Yes. I'll pass it along," Suk said, handing the phone back to Kang, who cleared his throat.
"Kang on the line." He wiped the sweat from his neck. "Yes. We'll do that. Thank you."
He brought the phone down from his ear, slowly, completely occupied by secretive thoughts he didn't share with us. Perhaps his mind was close to overdrive, trying to figure out how to hide that he had ordered the hit-and-run.
"They'll send another car from the military unit. It's better that fewer people, even in the police force, know about any of this," he said.
We waited at the side of the road, sitting on the security railing at a spot where it hadn't been warped or fallen. No cars drove past us during the entire wait, which only emphasized the planned nature of the hit-and-run.
