It was the thought of Kang that stirred my energy. We couldn't give up. Kang simply could not win.

"We have to move," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "We can get help from people driving by."

Sunghoon kept his eyes closed. I shoved him, panic swelling in my chest.

"Hey... I don't allow you to be tired anymore. You..."

He lay there, motionless.

I pushed him again.

"Wake up... Sunghoon, please, wake up..."

He cracked his eyes open.

"You have to get up one more time," I said.

Sunghoon looked at me with the most rueful eyes, silently pleading for me to stay, as if lying there together was his wish for his final moments.

That's what sent me into action. There were no final moments for him. I didn't allow that.

"No... Come on. We need to get help," I said, tearing up.

"Wait..." Sunghoon whispered.

He took as deep a breath as he could, squeezed his eyes shut, gritted his teeth, and began to push himself up on one elbow. His face contorted with pain, but together, we managed to sit up and get to our knees.

The world spun around me.

"We can do this," I said, reaching out to take his hand, feeling the weakness in his grip.

Sunghoon's legs trembled as he forced himself to stand. His body swayed dangerously. I tightened my hold on him, although I nearly passed out myself. We stumbled toward the road, leaning against each other, our combined strength barely enough to keep us upright.

The soaked ground was slippery beneath our feet, and more than once, we started to fall, until we caught support from the surrounding trees.

The forest thinned closer to the road.

My vision blurred again, the edges darkening.

I closed my eyes, and when I opened them, I saw a figure walking on the pavement.

"Kang," I whispered, my voice hoarse with terror.

Sunghoon tightened his grip on my hand.

Kang didn't look our way. He rushed in the direction we had driven from, mixing walking steps with running.

"He's escaping," I whispered.

"Good," Sunghoon mumbled, probably meaning that it was good he was going away from us.

We waited for Kang to disappear in the left direction before we continued along the road toward the bridge on the right, toward the crashed car.

The wreckage took shape down a hill, its upturned tires visible from the road.

I didn't share my plans with Sunghoon because saying out loud that I wanted to check if Suk and Lim were dead was too painful. Besides, the bigger reason for returning was that we would get help sooner if a passerby reported the accident.

Sunghoon was able to move only because of me. Walking downhill was hard for him. We weren't even near the crushed Kia when he fell to his knees and collapsed onto his side.

"I... can't... anymore..."

I shifted my focus between a body lying near the car and Sunghoon.

"I'll come back," I said and stumbled toward Suk.

Please, God, let him be alive; I prayed despite the unlikelihood of that kind of miracle. My body froze before I got too close. Suk's chest and stomach were dark with blood. He lay in a pool of reddish grey.
