Gracie Abrams flops down onto Taylor Swift's couch and no sooner does her body collapse into the upholstery than the tears start to flow from her eyes. Taylor observes Gracie's desolation with empathy. She's been in that very spot on the sofa before, equally heartbroken. It's undoubtedly hard, but she's glad she's here to help her friend.
"Lucky for you, I've got the recipe to cure all boy problems," Taylor says, looking to the younger girl with a sad smile. "I'll be right back." She disappears into the kitchen and Gracie can only wonder what is going on. However, a moment later, Taylor reappears with a carton of chocolate ice cream and two spoons, no bowls. She sits down beside Gracie on the sofa and pulls the lid off, handing over one of the spoons. "Dig in."
"Does this really work?" Gracie asks, eyeing the ice cream. "I mean... not to be dramatic... but this feels like a bigger deal than ice cream." She sighs as she wipes a tear from her cheek using the heel of her hand. She wishes she were a child again, back in the days when her problems really could be fixed with a little sweet treat. But now, she's a grown up, and all of those things that troubled her as a child seem insignificant now. She wonders if twenty years from now, she'll look back and think of this moment, thinking that it's just as silly as when she was in kindergarten and the girl who she was playing tag with told her that her sneakers weren't cool enough because they didn't light up. It was absolutely the end of the world at five years old, and now, it's just a memory that she looks at with a bit of laughter, remembering just how horrible that felt. And the tantrum that she threw when her parents told her she had just gotten new sneakers and she wasn't going to get a whole new pair just because she decided she wanted some fancy lights- she'd have to wait for Santa to put them under the Christmas tree.
What happened to her... it certainly feels a lot bigger than that pair of Velcro sneakers.
"It works as the first step of my cure," Taylor says. "Dig in. And we're gonna talk about it. After this, we're going to watch silly TV for hours on end and drink copious amounts of wine. It's all going to be okay. I promise." Taylor reaches out and rubs Gracie's back, trying to offer some sort of solace. The blonde's touch does seem to help a bit, allowing Gracie to take a few deep breaths, causing her heart rate to drop to something a bit more normal.
Reluctantly, Gracie dips her spoon into the ice cream. She figures that it can't hurt. She swallows her first bite, then opens her mouth to speak. "It came so out of nowhere. We went to bed together last night and this morning I woke up... Tay, I was literally naked and alone. I just wish I knew what it was all about," she says, rubbing tears out of her eyes.
Taylor feels her heart shatter. She can't believe that this boy, whoever he is, is putting Gracie through all of this. After spending so much time on tour together, Taylor came to look at Gracie as nothing short of a little sister. She's watched every step of this short relationship, watching the young woman fall hard and fast, completely enamored until Taylor got a text around lunchtime today, stating the turn of events.
"He left a Plan B and a post-it note on my nightstand," Gracie says. "He'd scribbled a note on it telling me to take the pill and that he didn't want to do this anymore."
The superstar's blue eyes widen. "Oh my god, you're joking."
"I wish I was," the brunette sniffles. "I've got photo evidence." She pulls up a picture on her phone and shows it to Taylor. Sure enough, the scene is just as she'd described it.
